just a friendly reminder that mars colonization is 100% science fiction.

take mount everest, stack four more mountains of equal size on top of it, and then try to live there.

it’s absolute nonsense.

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.

This is what they wrote.

You still have people saying, "I don't see any evidence that Musk is a neo-Nazi." And it's like, I can't know what's in his heart, but he follows them on Twitter, retweets them, promotes their conspiracy theories, parrots their rhetoric, and now recommends their party for Germany. But who knows?

This Day in Labor History: December 1, 1868. A young black former Union soldier named John Henry was among a group of convicts sent from Richmond to West Virginia to blast a railroad tunnel, where he would soon die. Let's talk the real John Henry, an actual human being who suffered under racism!

Strikingly, the only group that responded en mass and IMMEDIATELY to the neo-Nazi march this weekend in Columbus was a group of black men.

Everyone else? Oh, they put out statements. Black men linked arms and marched the NEXT day.

And this is why I say “Godspeed” to everyone who ain’t us.

great thread and this has been one of my obsessions in my column, to point people away from the european example and toward the american one.
One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.

Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.
