I remember summers (and skiing Ski Apache) in Ruidoso. Just beautiful! For the river to rise that quickly is unheard of. From devastating wild fires to massive floods… my heart goes out to all.
BREAKING: A catastrophic flash flood has hit in New Mexico.

The Rio Ruidoso has reportedly risen 17 feet in just 20 minutes.

This is difficult to forecast but very, very important. Taxpayers need to understand the fiscal impacts of such a rapid change. We need the full cost in terms of dollars and performance. And yea the performance component is critical.
@joshbivens-econ.bsky.social examines the economic effects of rapid federal downsizing that has occurred in the first few months of Trump's second term. The impact is difficult to forecast, but separating short- and long-run effects provides some insights.

Great summary. I am amazed that policy it not more in the news and talked about by citizens, esp. when it has such a huge impact on their lives.
One of the most significant moments of the 2026 cycle likely happened Tuesday night during the Ways and Means markup of the tax portion of Republicans' reconciliation bill.

It got no attention at the time and little since, but it is wildly important. Here's what happened--

This is really great insight on natural evolution.
Really fine piece by my brother Saul Elbein on the intersection of Lakota knowledge, western science, organisms as bundles of relationships rather than discrete units, and the puzzle of what happened to the original American horses

Very curious about how this works. Is the pending administration, just throw stuff out - like Gulf of America, Canada State of America, New American Greenland —and when something sticks, go full policy hog? Obviously heavy on the hog, light on the policy.
This could very well just be a troll

This is a very serious concern. This is not politics, this is the actual safety of the American people. People who don’t understand the significance of this situation. Sad,disturbing, disquieting.
U.S. intelligence lost over 2 dozen humint sources in Iran, China and Russia during the Nazi🤡’s 1st 9 months out of office while he had 100’s of stolen classified documents stashed at his wedding venue/home in Floriduh.
There are no coincidences in intelligence.

So moving CA folks to TX for the next 4 years then back again?
I’m moving to a pineapple under the sea
According to Mark Zuckerberg, people who live in California are biased but people who live in Texas are objective

I thought the Constitution and Bill of Rights was mandatory reading in US middle schools. I still believe the biggest win for Republicans has been the dumbing down of America post WW2.
Everyone needs to be encouraged to own and READ 1. the Constitution & Bill of Rights and 2. Tim Snyder's 'On Tyranny'.

Given the response to the last pandemic, I don’t have high hopes for this one. We should all be really concerned esp. since a wide swath of the population doesn’t believe in real science or medicine.
This strain of H5N1 appears to be especially vicious. Think 1918 pandemic. It’s one mutation away from establishing in humans. Our first line of defense is protecting ag and processing workers. The neurotropic aspect of this virus is extremely troubling.

Ok. I feel like I can’t speak any language clearly anymore. I grew up bilingual English/Spanish and speak neither well. Studied Japanese and Russian in college - which I can barely remember now. I need an app to improve all these and learn more. Any app recommendations?

Someone who shall remain nameless, used my “good dirt” (beautifully composted!) as fill for some crappy fence. Any ideas on how to top off and prep my spring veggie gardens now?
