Finally announcing our release date in a few days!!
It'll be interesting to write/reflect on this system after I finish level art. Partly we wanted to be able to do automated "palette swaps". This ended up not being super common, but the system still felt pretty efficient and handy - good for tuning stylized visuals with naturalistic lighting
Vertex colors are crucial to Angeline Era's unique, low-poly art style!
Much of the game's cube-based artwork is actually black and white. We then use a color palette system to create most of the game's vivid forests and towns!🌲

I think of Angeline Era's character art as "gestural" vertex colors: big blocks of gradients and hard edges that loosely gesture at finer details. They are often seen very small on the screen, so it helps them not appear over-detailed. But I also think it looks beautiful up close!

Long ago I probably would've tried to make these sigils super clean vector files with logical angles, and it would have taken forever and looked bad. Instead I just sketched them out at low-res then used photoshop "refine edge" to upscale. It adds a subtle organic ink-bleed quality, which suits them

today I rebalanced the poison mansion because it was impossible at level 1 on max difficulty... I finally cleared the level after 40 deaths.. please enjoy the poison mansion.
Wow there are a lot of levels in our game! We've never been into making things "a lot" for its own sake, but it seemed important for this game to convey certain feelings of travel and mystery. Maybe you will spend a lot of time in the poison mansion and completely miss the fairy training grounds...
