🤔 As it stands, the EU’s biggest farming policy is pretty ineffective when it comes to supporting #AnimalWelfare. bit.ly/3IdWCQQ

Yet with some structural changes, new objectives, clear targets & more, it could improve the lives of billions of sentient beings in Europe, in a major way.

The overlooked resource that could make a huge difference to farm animal welfare in the EU
Despite being the EU’s biggest farming policy, a new report reveals that the Common Agricultural Policy is not being used all that well when it comes to supporting farm animal welfare across Europe.…

We are told live export is a highly regulated industry.
We are told animal welfare is of utmost importance.
The evidence shows otherwise. DAFM even admits animals are over crowded, stressed and often immunocompromised. But the journey isn't the worst of it.

On Saturday @ethicalfarmie.bsky.social assembled to urge #BrittanyFerries to stop transporting live farmed animals from Ireland.

They're even transporting unweaned calves - just weeks old - which is against EU regulations💔 #BanLiveExports

A letter with over 120 signatures has been sent to @brittanyferries.bsky.social urging them to reverse the decision to start transporting unweaned calves from Ireland to France. Live export is a cruel and contentious trade 🐮

Feeding a growing population cannot come at the expense of animal welfare. Overcrowded fish farms cause stress for these intelligent animals & spread disease. What's more: it can take 500 small fish to produce 1 farmed salmon. How is this sustainable?

A bit of good news. Stena is taking the Horizon off the Rosslare/Cherbourg route for a month & the replacement ferry can't carry livestock. That's put a dampener on the industry. It's time farmers started caring for their calves themselves instead of offloading them👩‍🌾🐮

It's so unfair that EU rules state unweaned calves must be fed, what's wrong with depriving them of milk for 30+ hours whilst crammed in a truck 300 at a time. We have the best standards in the EU and should be allowed to break the law!

The most important welfare indicator for pigs is an intact curly tail. 99% of Irish pigs have docked tails 🤔
The main issue is the lack of optimal enrichment.
Finland & Sweden are the only member states that adhere to the EC Pig Directive.

It's not just Stena Line profiting from cruelty now Brittany Ferries has chosen to show the world they are also devoid of morals & compassion. They will soon start carrying calves from Ireland to France, an 18 hour journey during which the calves can't be fed

Animals exported outside the EU don't just suffer during the journey. They will all face a brutal slaughter, whether they go for dairy, breeding, fattening or slaughter. We recently aired a new film in Brussels showing a number of abattoirs in the destination countries: rb.gy/ci2csn

🛥️ Livestock vessel Shorthorn Express is loading today with 2,000 young bulls at Greenore Port for a shipment to Morocco - a country with appalling animal welfare standards, particularly at slaughter. Many bulls will become sick or injured during the 5 day sea journey, some may die 🐮
