Unweaned calves—some just two weeks old—are being shipped from Ireland to France on Brittany Ferries. 18 hours at sea with no milk. This is cruelty. It must stop. 📣Speak up for unweaned calves.

We're deeply disappointed that Unilever has abanonded it's commitment to source only cage-free eggs worldwide.

The decision risks leaving hens confined in cages and unable to express natural behaviours. We're calling on Unilever to reinstate its commitment to #EndTheCageAge.

📢 NGOs including @ciwf.org.uk + @fourpawsint.bsky.social are speaking up against the shipping company, Brittany Ferries, for its unlawful transport of very young calves.

These calves are not being fed for over 18 hours on a crossing from Ireland to France, in clear breach of EU law.

Across the UK, this winter’s bird flu season is expected to be among the worst on record.

Our Global CEO @philip-ciwf.bsky.social explains how intensive farming turbocharged the virus.⬇️
WHEN A WINTER VIRUS MEETS OUR MORNING EGGS
Why blaming wild birds misses the real cause of our worst avian flu outbreaks It begins with a silence, the kind followed by a cull. The setting belies the tragedy. The rolling hills and outstanding natural beauty of West Linton in the Scottish Borders....

Calves aren’t cargo. However, Brittany Ferries is still cruelly exporting unweaned calves from Ireland to France - despite acknowledging that this breaches EU law.

It’s almost five years since the European Commission committed to bringing forward legislation to #EndTheCageAge, yet the 300 million farmed animals suffering in cages every year are still waiting.

This is why we're taking legal action. ⬇️

PROMISING NEWS 🤞

In the UK, you shockingly don’t need an environmental permit to run an industrial beef or dairy farm, like you would for an intensive pig or chicken farm.

This could change, with the Government considering an expansion of the permitting system.

Wild birds are not to blame for devastating bird flu outbreaks. They are the heartbreaking proof of what happens when a virus, turbocharged by intensive farming, spills into the wider world.

Why it's wrong to blame wild birds for devastating avian flu outbreaks
Too often, wild birds are used as scapegoats for avian flu outbreaks as if they alone conjured this virus and delivered it to our farms

Our food system is broken.

When the choice is often between feeding our children lower-welfare imports from halfway around the world or buying factory-farmed chicken produced in the UK, it's clear something has to change.

The whole sector needs reforming.
