Understanding how forecasts can so wrong needs to be a research priority. It is important to remember that overall hurricane forecasts are a great success story and their reliability saves thousands of lives every year.

Combined, these records are just jaw-dropping -- no summer in recorded history here was anything like this. This may not be a permanent jump to a new climate regime, but time will tell...
