Really good poem about a fish in here
In "A Crisis of Attention", Paul Doolan spells out the challenges of the "age of distraction" and guides the reader through the relevant philosophical perspectives and remedies (Weil, Nietzsche, Pascal, Lawrence, Thoreau etc). Art by Susan Auletta philosophynow.org/issues/169/A...

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧵

Remember when Bluesky was all about positivity? Funny reading the comment sections to viral posts nowadays. Take a look at the comments on this one - everyone is just fighting.

What happened?
I wrote the latest cover story for The Atlantic. It's about the far-ranging implications of one simple statistic: Americans have never spent so much time alone, and surging solitude is warping our society.

I'm really proud of it, and I hope you read it.

It’s funny to see the contrast between US vs. Canadian airlines. US airlines are (surprisingly) more fair in my experience. www.reuters.com/business/aer...
Air Canada to introduce carry-on fees for basic fare passengers
Air Canada said on Wednesday it will start charging for bigger carry-on bags from passengers opting for its lowest-priced basic fare for North America routes starting Jan. 3.

Fascinating.
Wonderful piece by @cherylmisak.bsky.social. Kathy Wilkes is the reason my life went as it did. She was my final year tutor, & when she asked what I was doing next & I said training as a maths teacher, she gave me a copy of James Ladyman’s ontic structural realism paper & suggested I study with him.

This is what I thought when Trump started Truth Social.. but no. He still won
As the left flees and X loses broader relevance, it becomes a more overtly right-wing site, @alibreland.bsky.social writes. But the right needs liberals on X in order to push conservative perspectives into the mainstream.
The Right Has a Bluesky Problem
The X exodus is weakening a way for conservatives to speak to the masses.

What I hope for this website is that the developers decide that it is good enough as is and don't try to innovate with any new features.

Just keep it like this. We're good.
