A vector calculus for neural computation in the cerebellum
Null space theory predicts that neurons generate spikes not only to produce behavior but also to prevent the undesirable effect of other neurons on behavior. In this work, we show that this competitiv...

I wrote about a scientific paper called “The Unbearable Slowness of Being” which finds that the human brain’s throughput is just 10 bits per second. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2024/12/26/s...

Human Thought Is Far Slower Than Your Internet Connection (Gift Article)
A new study is “a bit of a counterweight to the endless hyperbole about how incredibly complex and powerful the human brain is,” one researcher said.

We just open-sourced two large wrist electromyography (EMG) datasets - one towards typing without a keyboard and the other for predicting hand poses - with baselines.

We believe these will help advance research into making high bandwidth non-invasive neuromotor interfaces a reality!
Advancing Neuromotor Interfaces by Open Sourcing Surface Electromyography (sEMG) Datasets for Pose Estimation and Surface Typing
We’re releasing emg2qwerty and emg2pose—two large datasets and benchmarks for sEMG-based typing and pose estimation, as part of the NeurIPS 2024 Datasets and Benchmarks track.

I recently wrote a primer on UMAP for Nature Reviews Primers. If you are looking for an overview of the method, a getting started primer, or best practices it is a good place to start.

🧠🤖 Do you have an ML background and want to learn a bit about #neuroscience? Check out our free online course!

We think neuro and ML both aim to understand intelligence, and so it's good to know a bit of both to inspire new ideas that neither field might find on their own.
