“There’s still this idea that news is only ‘real’ once it’s confirmed by big corporate outlets. After all, could one woman with absolutely zero institutional backing in leggings and a sweatshirt in her NYC apartment really be the one to break such an important story? Now we know the answer is yes.”
Breaking: The Handbasket is first to report catastrophic OMB funding memo
Posted on Bluesky earlier this evening, other major outlets have since confirmed.

Government-funded research unlocks cures for disease, propels the startup economy, helps us better prepare for natural disasters, the list goes on and on. I don’t think most Americans realize how much societal good comes from such a teeny tiny portion of the federal budget.
Not just the National Institutes of Health, now the National Science Foundation is put on pause.
Reminder: research is a multi-step process. Pausing the peer review panels by itself creates months of delay.
I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

Speaking of healthcare. Let's make @bsky.app the platform that fights misinformation. Some great follows are @drsusanoliver.bsky.social @jsm2334.bsky.social @therealtruther.bsky.social

Let's get them more followers and engagement than other platforms and let health science accounts find a home

Mission-driven orgs, this is your regular reminder to beef up your owned media (website, blogs, email lists) and not put all your proverbial comms eggs into the social platform basket.

Trump’s immigration crackdown is devastating the food industry. In Bakersfield, ICE raids caused a 75% drop in workers, leaving crops to rot. With undocumented workers making up over half the workforce, this policy will drive food prices up and deepen inequality across the nation.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

I would caution people to stop relying on the Constitution as written to have any meaning other than what the people Trump put on the Supreme Court says it means.

"He can't do that" is not a useful response to the things he's going to do. The correct response is "Will the Court uphold that?"
Trump cannot abrogate birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment by way of executive order. That’s not how constitutional rights work.

Serious question, why has it taken so long for Biden's federal judicial nominees to get confirmed when Dems control the Senate? Why are they racing against the clock now when it's been months since the nominees' committee hearings? www.reuters.com/legal/govern...
US Senate Democrats race against clock to confirm more judges
U.S. Senate Democrats on Wednesday secured the confirmation of two more of President Joe Biden's judicial nominees as they race against the clock to fill as many court vacancies as possible before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.
