Four large Dutch universities, including Leiden University where I work, have decided to throw international psychology bachelor programs under the bus in an effort to appease the rightwing government.

Here's my blog why this is a terrible idea.

Two days ago, four Dutch universities announced discontinuing their English-speaking psychology bachelor programs (1, 2). I will briefly explain (1) how this decision came to be, (2) why this is such ...

I never thought that fear of detention or deportation would have been on the list of reasons for making conferences hybrid, but this seems compelling

Straight off we see the impact of changes to student visas, in particular restricting dependents. Student visas are limited terms though, meaning including them in overall stats tends to skew them, but makes an easy "win" for a government looking to reduce immigration. 2/

Long thread of initial reflections on today's immigration statistics as I read through them. First off, it would be great if people could remember they are from June, that means that, not matter your political persuasions, they are down to the previous government. 1/

“Ablation” was originally introduced into AI with the correct sense (removing a component). But in the last 5 years, its meaning has expanded to “sensitivity study”. As a reviewer, I insist on the correct usage.

I will be honest: with Mastodon, what put me off with a lot of UNSAID expectations.

It felt like you cannot just write something like here:

- What server you’re on matters (each one has own rules)

- Adding filters to posts were (sometimes) important (eg if writing about politics or Twitter)
Mastodon felt too niche, and had a barrier to entry which was confusing. Bluesky is very very similar to Twitter (and I specifically mean Twitter and not X).
