And all of Israel’s allies know this.

Today is the 152nd anniversary of the death of Charles Agnew “by the hand of an assassin” in Egypt on 22nd March 1873, and I’ve been commemorating the day at Canterbury Cathedral where he’s memorialised in the south aisle.

After paying my respects to Charles Agnew today, I had the chance to present a copy of Avarice of Empire to Ian Osterloh of the Canterbury Historical and Archaeological Society, and to spend some time discussing the research behind the story.

This 20 para coin, equivalent to a halfpenny, was minted in Egypt in 1860/1 and in use during the period depicted in Avarice of Empire. A special ‘happy publication’ gift from the wonderful @emmalucycole.bsky.social

Fun to imagine one of the characters travelling through Egypt carrying it.

Regardless of all my years of academic training, what actually alerts me to the fact that I'm about to enter a great text? When the author acknowledges their cat with 2 paras & a full-page photo. That's love. And authenticity!

I refuse to surrender to misery.

What we fight for must be better.

You know the phrase "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution."? It's attributed to anarchist Emma Goldman, but is a paraphrase of a longer paragraph from Goldman’s autobiography Living My Life:

Bryan demanding his share of my tea! He knows the sound of my hand picking up a cup & does a special little head bob, that means he wants some.
His favourite is cherry green (by Tugboat in Truro), but he's also fond of jasmine green, Pukka 'night time', & rooibos chai 🤣
He does NOT like ginger tea.

I've been overwhelmed by medical appointments & legal assessments & it's been draining.
But then I was asked if I'm able to 'balance my chequebook'.
I mean, I'm old enough to remember having one, but using that to judge my cognitive function might possibly skew results!
Surely we can we do better?

Why truth in Travel Writing is important:
5 men are about to replicate TE Lawrence's journey from on 'Seven Pillars'; which was written from scratch several times, twice without any notes (he burned them) & YEARS after the events. There is v little accuracy in the book.
I'm both amused & concerned.
