Whenever I go on a work trip I give a hotel room tour to my kids on a video call after I check in. Tonight my 13-year-old is away on a field trip and she video called me to give me a tour of her room!! I love this so much!

Multiple sources have confirmed that ICE/Border Patrol is headed back to the Raleigh and Durham areas for undefined deportation actions. We've heard 50 ICE agents, charter flights and hotels booked for all of them in the Raleigh area.

Let us know what you hear.

My 13 year old and eight of her friends are having a slumber party and they are such a chaotic in-between age— but they are also super sweet and supportive and kind. They give me hope for the future!

I find this with teaching coding, too. Making a mistake and figuring out what went wrong makes you a far better programmer than reading over code that works.
I keep thinking the *process* of researching is as important as what you discover.

It forces you to consider what impacts and relates to what you are looking for and the context of what you find impacts its meaning.

I read this and just cried. She deserved so much better.
NEW:

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

This breaks my heart because my absolute favorite part of parenting is witnessing my kids growing up and developing their own interests and ideas! I hope I’m never so wedded to the idea of authority that I refuse to see what amazing adults they become.
I found a link to this picture earlier, wherein a woman laments her estrangement from her adult child due to (ostensibly) her political leanings. As an estranged adult, I'd like to point out a few things wrong with it and offer some support to my fellow estranged adults out there.

I went to delete a text from an unknown number but it was a statistics question so I wrote back and answered it… my Achilles heel!

VOTERS
It is INSANE but the GOP is still fighting the 2024 election in North Carolina and their judges just said 60,000 voters don't exist 4 months later)

You have 15 days to prove you exist -

NC Court of Appeals gives over 60,000 challenged voters 15 days to prove eligibility
The majority wrote that, even though they have the authority to completely throw out the contested ballots, they decided to instead mandate a cure period for most of the challenged voters.

I helped judge our graduate student research symposium today and it just broke my heart to contrast these brilliant students presenting AMAZING and important work with how science and research are being treated by our government right now.

I made a glaze tonight in the pot we boil eggs in every morning and as I was washing up, I told the pot (out loud) that it must’ve been a nice change of pace! 😂

I’m teaching my Sunday school class this week and our book chapter has a ton of stats in it— went on a deep dive to update them with more current data and they’re basically all wrong. I’m thinking I’ll never be asked to teach again…

Told my older two they can take turns playing Christmas songs at dinner and both of their faces lit up so much that I must have made a terrible mistake. Parenting tweens and teens is tough!

I teach an intro Python class and one of my students sent me code they wrote on their own to calculate their grade! It’s commented and even prints everything with nice formatting at the end. Made my day!!

I wish there more more tests like COVID tests that you could do at home— it’s such a relief to know I just have general crud. More importantly, I love the little swabs and tubes. I always pretend I’m a bench scientist when I use one of these kits.

I love how middle schoolers are just a chaotic mix of kids, teens, and adults. I have ten sixth graders over and they’ve gone from dancing like we’re at a club to wearing costumes and playing restaurant with the toy food and cash register. The best!!
