also it looks like there are some new folks here? I'm Emily; I post about political science, textbooks, my cat, public schools, my very amusing kid, Somerville/Boston, and soccer for the most part.
I must say that my bsky feed right now is really reinforcing that I have made good choices in who to follow.

I've lost track of the number of times I've said this same thing in relation to this World Cup.
I wish Grant Wahl was here rn

The guy who won the mayor's race in my city last night? His base originated out of running the youth soccer organization in the city for a few years. SO many parents who normally would have been kinda checked out on local politics were invested and involved.
ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections
Off their phones and into the streets

I've gotten to work with Jessie on the AFAS School Improvement Committee and if I lived in Ward 3 (alas) I would 10000% vote for her so that the ENTIRE district can benefit from her expertise and curiosity!
I'm excited to vote for Jessie Ratey because her professional experience makes her ready to get to work for the people of Somerville on day 1. She's collected a bevy of endorsements from people who believe in her and I would urge you to vote for her on November 4th.

It has been said that nothing annoys me more than bad staff work. Today I am reminded of this tale: www.reuters.com/article/worl...

Apparently my mom has become a soccer sicko, as she told me she woke up at 7:30 AM and was dismayed at the lack of soccer on TV this morning.

Stuck in a waiting room playing local news, where a segment with the chyron "Car Almost Slams Into Dunkin'" has played multiple times.

Anyone at the bottom of Summer St missing a gray tabby kitten? She's in my apartment at the moment, in a side room.

I got some really good news today and it's like my body can't quite process it. (A lot of good people worked really hard for a long time and something came out better than expected under really challenging circumstances.) Hopefully going to celebrate tomorrow but right now going to hold this tight.

I am in upstate ny (ROC) and I need an explanation for why buffalo wings from any random place are a million times better than what I can get in Boston.

Robert Redford lived up the street from my grandparents for a few years and my grandmother would have agreed with this--"he always took in his own trash cans."
I first saw Sneakers in college. The year was 1992 and I was 17. They did a special screening on campus because Lawrence Lasker was an alum. Anyway, it was the first movie I saw Robert Redford in and it was CINEMA. Best movie ever. RIP to that handsome unproblematic man.

Just did this! And yes, you still get a sticker if you vote early, and they have the weird red-white-and-blue dancing creature outside city hall.
I should have sent this this morning, but if you want to vote early in Somerville's preliminary election (which is next Tuesday), you can go to City Hall Wed and Thursday.
Sept 10th 8:30-4:30
Sept 11th 8:30-7:30

This link also has info on mail in and absentee voting!

Again, the Cat Mayor race is among the few things keeping me from losing it entirely these days: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
The cat mayoral race: meet 11 runners and riders in the US’s most furious – and furriest – election
It has been the talk of Somerville, Massachusetts this summer, with the winner announced later today. Will it be the candidate who promises free kibble or the one who speaks gnomically of ‘CRIME’?

My kid is 11(!) now but I feel this in my BONES. Still pals with some daycare buds. I remember my kid twisting out of my arms at ~5mos to try and get to his provider. Also did a happy dance when he went to public pre-k at 4.

There was an all-time, top-tier Dunkin where my parents used to live. 20+ years ago they were putting the sugar in the bottom of the iced coffee cup, adding a little hot coffee to dissolve it, and THEN finishing the cup. Legendary.
dunkin is a high floor fast food option but a good dunkin is as good of a fast food option as there is

this is the politics keeping me from losing it altogether. my city may drive me up the DINGDANG WALLS sometimes, but every now and again we truly come together to celebrate what matters (cats).
there’s an election for Cat Mayor currently happening in Somerville, Mass. and every cat deserves to win

Women’s sports update: you want a seat at the good sports bar for women’s euro finals? You gotta get there ~30 min before kickoff, minimum.
