Desperately want to extricate our country from this antiquated political union & return to being a normal independent country once again.
Dandy to my core.

Furthermore, the proposed bill will only apply in England and Wales.

Not quite true in terms of British social policy, Henry. Scotland has its own Assisted Dying Terminally Ill (Scotland) Bill which MSPs will vote on in due course. Devolution……

I meant pre-1870 has to searched via National records of Scotland, sorry.

Anything prior to 1870 has to be done through the national records of Scotland. There are two searches they can do at a cost, which I’m willing to go ahead with but I’m not quite sure what to ask for if looking at 1500’s. Presumably building address wouldn’t have been a number?

Ah..that kiboshes my theory then. I have sasines for the building 17th century but quite complex getting my head around them. Sasines in Aberdeen archives date back to 1484 so it’s possible we could pinpoint a transaction of an earlier building & maybe names.

Morning. This could be very interesting! As you know, 6 Upperkirkgate has been owned by Provosts since 1680.

The eminent Thomas Menzies of Pitfodels was Lord Provost in 1559 & he married an Elizabeth Forbes after his first wife died.
M-Menzies EF-Eliz Forbes?

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you know it was there and how did you get the pic? Fascinating.

My go to, which you probably will know is Diane Morgan’s first book ‘Lost Aberdeen’ and Doric Columns. That will give you a lead and then check building warrants at Aberdeen city archives. Canmore is also very good.

Oh my actual god. You must be the only one who knows about that! I have never seen it. Intriguing! I’ll have to go away and do some digging now.
The drawing I’ve posted is of the frontage before it was restructured so it would have looked like that c1680.

This building in rich in history and here’s the pend and the second phase 1730. Parts of the 1680 building have been incorporated into the fabric of the building.

Wow. Where is that skew putt/ Corbelling? Not seen that before.

I’ll post a few pics later.

I own a property there top right at Ross’s Court, 6 Upperkirkgate.

Built in 1680 by Provost George Leslie.

I’ve written about the huge coin hoard found there and more & held the bronze medieval pot it was found in.

Same for me. The union is not good for any of us - maybe worst of all for England. But the cloak of Britishness and the MO of the two Westminster parties seems to hide England from itself. Easier for England to dissolve the union, but easier for us to see the need. And there's the rub.

Which, frankly, is one of the reasons I became an advocate for Scottish independence: the hope that achieving it would give a wake-up call to England too and my friends and family there might benefit from the changes.

The UK insisting that democracy stopped for Scotland in 2014 seems a very poor argument in favour of the Union.
