Once I was fishing in the Kananaskis River and a Grizzly Bear walked right by me, not 30m away. It did not see me. Nothing happened. I reported it.
Here is a blurry photo I took from my car of a mother Grizzly and two cubs. Again, nothing happened. No shots fired by either side.

My four closest grizzly "encounters" over a couple decades hiking were where we were asked "did you see the bear? [that our group saw walking toward your group in this confined part of the landscape]" and no, we did not see the bear. It completely ghosted us!

🗣️ Elmeligi said public safety is the top priority but that is tied to co-existence.

There are many science-based options to manage grizzly bears already identified in the recovery plan for the species aside from bringing back the hunt or the minister’s grizzly bear-killing wildlife response team.

I found this dude napping - NAPPING - in a parking lot. Lots of people watching. Great staff from Parks came, gently woke him, and moved him off. #andnothinghappened

I encountered this gorgeous blond black bear near Canmore. I stopped the car, took a picture from the safety of the car and drive on. It did bear things. No shots fired by either side. I reported the sighting and recorded the observation on iNaturalist.

Not this year but last summer...I was biking to a music festival and came across a black bear on the trail. He did come at me, but his stance was "whatcha doin'?" I yelled SIT out of panic and habit (I have large dogs) and...he did. And then I rode away.

Let's tell the truth about bear encounters and coexistence. If you've had a bear encounter this year, it was amazing and nothing happened, tell me about it. Email your story (3 sentences or less) and 1 photo to Banff.kananaskis@assembly.ab.ca. post it on your socials too and tag me and the Minister.

🗣️"[Elmeligi] said the recovery plan calls for human-wildlife conflict specialists across the province as well as a reduction in the number of human-caused grizzly bear mortalities, which comes down to doing a better job of coexisting, which means greater education."
