“Rumor has it that by the time he died, the better-days-past vine had overtaken his house so completely that the funeral director had to come equipped with gardening shears to remove the body from the premises.“

Oh I just know this plant would be the end of me. ✨🌱 🍵

Fun fact: This is the actual plant that lives in my house (a Scindapsus pictus Silver Splash, for the botanically inclined) that inspired "Care Guide for Your Better-Days-Past Vine." Let me know if you see any faces in it.

We are in a celebratory mood, here at the tower. Today's post is very special, not only because it is in a fun format (we love a fun format), but because it is our 500th post! Please enjoy...

Guys, it's the oligarchs. If you want to blame someone for 2024, blame the oligarchs. Anyone telling you to blame someone else is part of the oligarchy. Dark money has been to blame since citizens united.

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.

Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

RFK Jr. says there are no autistic poets, so we interviewed one.

Hear from Elizabeth McClellan, @popelizbet.bsky.social, an award-winning poet, attorney, and legal educator based in Memphis, Tennessee.
RFK Jr. says there aren't autistic poets. We asked an autistic poet.
"I will challenge RFK Jr. to write a poem as good as me any day of the week."

I've seen some people saying how "AI"-generated text is now as good as certain published authors, and honestly I think it's really brave for these folks to admit in public how poor their reading comprehension has to be

Really pleased to have this little piece in the latest issue of Bending Genres, out today. It's quite different from what I usually write & I'm so glad it found such an awesome home. Thank you, thank you to @bendinggenres.bsky.social. Can't wait to read the whole issue!

One of my absolute favorite things is: Great Horned Owls 🦉 In the evenings I walk my dogs, and their hoot hoot hooots just … calm me.

Today one swooped in front of my car, landed on a branch, and looked straight at me.

Since we’re talking about how much billionaires suck again, here’s a reminder that your local indie bookstore deserves your business this holiday season. They have gift cards and are happy to mail stuff out. Same goes for @bookshop-org.bsky.social. Buy books. Give books. Support bookstores.
