‘Vibe Coding’ is now in the dictionary. Poetically, ‘technical debt is not’.

'Vibe Coding' Is Now In The Collins Dictionary. Poetically, 'Technical Debt' remains absent
The addition of 'Vibe Coding' to the Collins Dictionary made headlines recently. But somewhat poetically, there is no entry for the consequences that can easily result from the celebrated praxis.

I disagree with everything Tommy Robinson stands for. But this ruling is a timely reminder of the deeper problems with the UK’s Schedule 7 powers.

If you carry a phone across a UK border, this should matter to you.

My take👇

The Right Decision, Even For The Wrong Person
I find Tommy Robinson repugnant. But the courts were right to clear him of terrorism related charges for refusing to give border officials access to his phone.

I wrote a little piece on why the public doesn’t trust AI, why, and what politicians need to do if they want to turn this around.

Since the introduction of the Online Safety act. It appears the governments on cyber security advice, improves access to porn for home workers.

China is surging towards AI dominance. Building infrastructure, consolidating data & cultivating talent.

I wrote about why we should not try to win the AI race by copying China’s playbook. And how a values based approach, will lead to tech that works for everyone.

The West Cannot Win by Imitating China on AI
As China surges toward AI dominance, the West must ask: what kind of future should it be building?

Market square in Marrakech.

Not had much head space for photography recently. This came off the end of a roll from our last trip.

I have it from a reliable source that the correct way to fix all vibe coding problems is as follows;

Windows: try deleting system 32

However, you measure innovation. It’s very difficult to call products that discriminate against marginalised groups as “progress”…unless, of course, you are ‘making bank’ in the gold rush.
AI Bias, Corporate Responsibility & The Need For Regulation
Innovation, progress and equitability are not mutually exclusive. But achieving all three is only going to be possible with meaningful regulation.

Even in the age of code assistants. Understanding algorithms, data structures, coding best practises and system architectures remains essential to making informed decisions.

…but people can possess all these abilities, and still fail a code test.

Rethinking Code Tests in Technical Hiring
In an era where AI can ace coding tests that stump talented developers, are we finally ready to admit these tests have always been broken?

Weapons of Math Destruction was an unsettling read when it was first published. Nearly a decade later, one of the most troubling aspects is not just the persistence of algorithmic bias; it's how normalised it's becoming.
Weapons Of Math Destruction; Eight Years On
In 2016, Cathy O’Neil exposed to a mass audience how mathematical algorithms shape modern life, often in ways that reinforce inequalities and injustices.
