Finally!

Nearly a quarter of new UK homes now have heat pumps—big progress since we highlighted the fossil fuel problem with Ben Webster at openDemocracy in 2022.

Next step: fully implement the Future Homes Standard and end fossil fuels in new builds.

Good article here on how Scandinavian countries have embraced heat pumps moving almost entirely off fossil fuel heating. In short:
- grants
- lower electricity price
- carbon tax making other options expensive
- a ban on fossil fuel heating.
If this worked for them, it could work in the UK too.
Scandinavian countries are the world's undisputed heat pump leaders. How have they done it?

NEW: A UK firm intends to start making this new form of "thin" triple glazing with a 0.5mm centre pane of super strong glass developed by Corning.

It could let people to swap out their double glazing for triple glazing - without changing their window frames.

Can this tech solve triple glazing's biggest problems?
Triple glazing doesn't have to be excessively heavy and thick

🚗💨 EVs are holding up better than combustion cars, says ADAC.

In 2024, ICE cars aged 2–4 years were 2.5x more likely to break down than EVs.

EVs on the road ↑ 97%
EV breakdowns ↑ only 46%

It's a myth that "hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour".

Burning hydrogen results in harmful NOx emissions. In urban areas this becomes the dominant source of NOx pollution if we switched to hydrogen for heating.

Shocking to see H2Heat project financed by the EU peddling such untruths 👇

People often take the view of 'waiting until the boiler packs in' but this demonstrates that the best time to swap is when it's financially and practically convenient for the end user. Plus, you'll maximise the savings the sooner you do it.
Does it make sense to rip out a new gas boiler and replace it with a heat pump? From carbon perspective yes: Replacing a new gas boiler with a heat pump in the UK cuts emissions by 77-86%.

This includes embodied emissions from manufacturing.

A heat pump offset its embodied carbon after 13 months.

This, it needs repeating aggressively and repeatedly. Gas drove up electricity prices in UK, not renewables or wretched Net Zero.
It wasn’t net zero — it was fossil gas that drove up UK electricity prices.

Spot on, @pilitaclark.bsky.social! Gas sets the price most of the time.

As @dharavyas.bsky.social Energy UK, says: "It’s the volatile cost of fossil fuels and our dependence on them that have driven up energy bills."

It's insane that politicians will actively try to spoil progressive developments which will benefit the whole world just for the sake of a bit of political gain. Pathetic.
When will we embrace a political system which seeks to benefit the masses rather than just tribal point scoring?

There is no country/zone with a) high prices and low carbon emissions or b) with low prices and high emissions.

The higher the carbon emissions from electricity generation in 2024, the higher the prices and vice versa.

A reminder that electrification remains the single most important route to reducing emissions. Increasing the rate of transition to heat pumps is key to that. More legislation is required to limit gas installations in existing properties urgently.
Last week the @thecccuk.bsky.social published its Seventh Carbon Budget, a crucial set of advice on how the UK can reach net zero.

What does it say about decarbonising home heating, one of the most difficult challenges for reducing emissions, and an area of focus for Nesta?
What does the Seventh Carbon Budget tell us about decarbonising home heating?
The future of home heating will be electric, and we need to move towards that future quickly

Great thread explaining how our grid structure is costing us money and perpetuating the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity.
It's lovely and windy today, which means lots of clean green electricity.

Or does it? See all those purple dots in Scotland? Those are wind farms that we're turning off as of 8am… 🤔

Credit to Renault for working hard to minimise the impact of EV fires. Considerably less common than in ICE vehicles, these fires can be time consuming to extinguish. They've created a 'Fireman switch' which will be freely available for other manufacturers to use.
