Autosub Long Range, better known as #BoatyMcBoatface, has helped to recover a 55 year old camera in Loch Ness! 📷

Despite film from the camera being developed by a NOC engineer, no footage of the Loch Ness Monster was found.

Why have the sea surface temperature suddenly risen in 2023/24? 🌊
Is it true that climate models cannot simulate such SST jumps? What is common to such jumps? How will SSTs evolve over the next months and years? Are we in uncharted territory? More from our recent study in Nature is here👇
Record sea surface temperature jump in 2023–2024 unlikely but not unexpected - Nature
Observations and climate models suggest that the global sea surface temperature jump in 2023–2024 was not unexpected and would have been nearly impossible without anthropogenic warming.

Lots of replies here* mentioning tides, but what would it actually do to them to take the moon away? You'd still have the daily and twice-daily solar, S1 and S2. No spring-neap cycle. Atlantic tides still resonant, but about a third the size?

*Gail is talking about the sci-fi Space 1999.
Well, it's been 26 years since the nuclear dump station on the moon exploded and sent it spinning out of orbit.

I don't even miss it, really.

“Relatively little is known about what impacts fixed and floating wind farms could have as offshore wind expands into deeper waters, with climate change adding further complexity.”
NOC has delivered a government roadmap for offshore wind environmental monitoring. 🌬️

Imagine the moment when someone said - you know what, why don’t we stick sensors in orbit around the earth to measure our environment. And satellite remote sensing was born.

Could this be as transformational? An exciting prospect.
