Spent the weekend in the office to finish A Thing after a week with very little sleep. Now very tired, but also rather more excited about research than I had expected to be. Interesting 🤔

Oh for gods sake, we're asking about strikes again, at expense of the members, at a time when we really need to focus on so many other things. I suppose when you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. The perpetual, tedious cries for a strike really don't help at all
I want to be very clear: we tried to stop this. We urged HEC to look at context and evidence, we were ignored and accused of 'betrayal'. Our full @ucucommons.bsky.social HEC report is forthcoming. If you want things to change at national level, you need to VOTE IN THE ELECTIONS.
We tried. I’m sorry. The vote was very close and our pleas for common sense and taking our time to work out next steps were met with accusations of ‘betrayal’ from the usual suspects. Commons HEC report imminent.

No, I don’t enjoy this.

This is very bad. Although entirely predictable. Once more the humanities are being cut back to prop up STEM and, increasingly, AI investment (including at the expense of bench science). In the past, cuts to humanities were promoted on two separate logic streams that do not hold true: /1
Dean at U of Chicago: “She also expressed concerns that the administration might be asking the Arts & Humanities Division to cut back to compensate for other divisions’ financial challenges, asking whether ‘our entire unit [is] being used to float other units facing cuts.”
UChicago Arts & Humanities Division to Restructure Amid “Historic Funding Pressures”
“The status quo is not an option,” Deborah Nelson, dean of the Division of the Arts & Humanities, wrote to division faculty on June 18.

How do you ensure a nation fails to cope with drought? Privatise its water system.

Almost everyone wants our water renationalised. Almost everyone, that is, except the government.

This week's column.

High water bills, filthy rivers – and now drought. This is England's great artificial water crisis of 2025 | George Monbiot
In its refusal to nationalise water, it’s clear the government operates in the interests of private capital and not of the country, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.
