PhD student at St Louis University. Union yes!
I know I need to check the news when I start seeing vaguely-worded, despairing posts on my social media timelines.

Dear stomach: I know you spent the last 2 weeks with free access to cookies & other treats during waking hours. I swear you are not starving just because I'm back to eating regular meals. Please calm down!

Heading home after a long holiday break to visit my parents. Made possible not because of institutional policy but because my personal supervisor is okay with it. Every grad worker should be able to take a break like this! #SLUUnion

Various people around the world have been doing horrific evil things every day this year but it feels like a LOT has been packed into the last 48 hours.

People tell me I’m nuts when I say this but it is true and happening. The sooner we all accept it and keep our guard up about it the better.
People on this app get really angry every time I point out that social media manipulation is a real phenomenon that we are all stewing in and that’s having real world consequences and I’m sure part of that is engagement farmers who do that manipulation not liking people talking about it

lrt: Up until the start of May, SLU agreed that we all deserve 12 months of pay. At the end they didn't. Did we not R1 hard enough for them?

Today's news is making me think of something I heard a professor say recently about how they do all the bad shit on weekends and Mondays to try and demoralize good people as they go into the week.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

With age, I am understanding things I never understood when I was younger.

ONE of those things, is the value of doing Fucking Anything™.

Taking ANY action, inspires other people to take action. This ripple effect is more powerful than the original Anything™ you do.

Lmao I just called my useless Senators' offices and for a moment I was excited to get through to a real person and not an answering machine, but they weren't even pretending to listen. 🫠 In case I needed more proof that his "I value hearing from my constituents" VM message was a total lie.

What this administration is teaching Universities is that even if you comply - punish students for protests, ban masks, remove DEI from websites and classes - they will still defund you and try to break you apart. Basically, there is no point in complying.
