Slow Horses S5 Episode 4 drops today. There's lots you'll love & the last scene is, I promise, a classic of the SH WTF-have-we-done-genre. #SlowHorses

Thanks, Dave. Appreciate you taking the time to review. Am writing - slowly - between other commitments another novel.
Just finished Self-Help by @edwarddocx.bsky.social, a Booker-longlisted story with very credible yet operatic-scale characters energised by word-perfect descriptions of their locations. Is Docx heir to Dostoevsky, Dickens and Zola?

Sad to hear of the death of Charlotte Raven. She was clever and inventive and scurrilous and quick-witted and always such engaging company.

An amazing essay that uses Shrek, Polyphemus &Grendel to understand the Id of American populism in a Joseph Campbell & literary fashion. Consider Jarry’s #UbuRoi as well. I grew up in Bucks Co & am now in Ithaca so actual &archetypal reflections resonate.
Considered by some to be the most depressing day of the year, this third Monday in January is about to live up to that notion as the Orange Ogre is elevated to the office of King of the Trolls. If you need something to lighten your mood, have a read of this www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...
Fee, fi, fo…Trump: how an ogre won back the White House
Large, fearsome, gluttonous and cruel: Donald Trump is the archetypal ogre. So how did he manage to stomp back for a second term?

What a profound article - it makes such sense - and until we can each recognise our own inner ‘Donald’, we cannot find a real response that embraces and transcends our darkest impulses.

This piece by my old pal Ed Docx sums it all up. I was going to write something about this on substack, but he's done it better. Excellent.
