I finally did it! Here's my article on the massive style sheet I made for Blue Planet: Recontact, created by @biohazardjeff.bsky.social. Thank you to @nadiageageapupa.bsky.social for encouraging me and @ninjafingers.bsky.social for editing this.

Getting it Right (Whale): A Reef-erence to a Whale of a Style Sheet
Back in June, when I was a guest on Nadia Geagea Pupa’s podcast, The Editor’s Half Hour, a woman in the comments (I’m afraid I don’t know her name, and I’ve been unable to find said comment) asked if ...

Getting tired of AI boosters who say they are worried about the ethics of using generative AI, but who still use it to make slop.

It's like a smoker bemoaning what cigarettes did to their lungs as they light up.

Just like Big Tobacco, the AI companies don't care about our health or well-being.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

I've been busy in the evenings knitting a scarf for my mother-in-law. The pattern is called Midwest Moonlight and it is knit in Green Mountain Spinnery's Cotton Comfort in Iris, which is a wool-cotton blend. I'm currently about a third of the way done and need to hustle to get it done!🧶

Another day of editing and another two terms that should be treated the same way but aren't. And of course both terms are used in the same sentence.

Argh.

Why do so many people feel that LinkedIn is the place to post scripture?

Caveat that it does makes some sense if you're a religious leader or work at a religious institution.

Another instance of two terms that define similar things and are spelled similarly, but one is two words and the other is one.

One thing that I like about knitting in public is how it sparks so many conversations. This morning I had a nice chat with a woman while we were both in a doctor's waiting room. A couple of weeks ago, I talked with two women at the pharmacy as we waited for flu shots.

My current work setup: space heater, heating pad, knitted blanket (knit by moi).

I love being able to be warm while I work. I previously worked in many offices that were kept at around 60 degrees and I'd be freezing all day.

So true! It saves us so much time, and allows us to do our best to polish up your words.
True! Though tbh we prefer it when writers give us readable manuscripts so we can focus on making them great!
Editors have a really hard job, and the good ones can make something unreadable readable, and the great ones can make something unreadable into something good. But they're basically invisible, until someone tries to write without one.

Don't worry fellow editors, I've been assured by a random woman on LinkedIn that clients don't care whether or not we use generative AI in our work. As we all know, consumers of goods and services are famously unfussy about whom they give their money to.

Because I think we could all use it today, I'm reposting a photo I took this summer of Elliot with one of his stuffed friends.

I'm not sure how many stuffed animals he has, at least four or five. He'll be carrying a different one each time we run into him and his person.

I very recently finished watching both seasons of Severance (I know, I know). I'm also someone who distrusts generative AI. No surprise then that I loved the essay "Severance Is the Future Tech Bros Want" by Tenacity Plys for Tor.

This “deal” is a bad deal for Americans. These pinky promises from Republicans won’t save anyone’s healthcare. We can’t just surrender and leave working people worse off. It’ll be a no from me.

I'm so glad that he is one of my senators. Vermont has an older population than some other states, and Sanders knows that a lot of Vermonters depend on the ACA and can't afford to pay more.
Sanders: That is a totally meaningless gesture. You can get 100 votes here and it won't mean anything because the House is not going to take it up.
