September aurora reflections >>>

Photos captured by my roommate Maia Hartwigsen on one of her aurora tours. I’m partnering up with her again this season, and you should take a look at what we have to offer:

An impressive negative polarity coronal hole has now rotated into view on the Earth-facing disk of the Sun. This feature is producing a high-speed solar wind stream which may arrive at Earth in 6-7 days and spark minor to moderate geomagnetic storms.

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle… Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.

Early morning Mount Fuji. I love the twilight light from the opposite direction of a sunrise, especially with mountains. This was late autumn season, when I saw lots of autumn leaves at the bottom of the lake. Taken with a CPL to make them visible.

~Dancers~

Liverleaves [Hepatica nobilis] really are one of my favourite wildflower species. Sometimes they tell little stories...

Don't they look like dancers?

Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.

Last month was again the 3rd hottest (after 2023/2024) August on record globally. This was around 1.29°C above the 1850-1900 "pre-industrial" reference period. Striking anomalies in Siberia and Antarctica.

Can it get better than seeing an auroral substorm on a frozen lake in Alaska with no one else around, calm winds, new moon, -20 F, and bortle 1 skies?

♨️Thursday was a day of excessive, historic heat across the Southwestern U.S.

Record highs were set in:
• Palm Springs: 119°
• Phoenix: 118°
• Scottsdale: 116°
• Tucson: 112°

🔴Exceptional, dangerous heat made at least 5x more likely -- or almost impossible without -- human-caused climate change.

Wildfires continue to burn across parts of the U.S. and Canada again, and air quality has dropped from "moderate" to "unhealthy" again for millions of Americans Thursday (lasting through the weekend).

Here’s a quick 🧵 on how climate change is part of the smoke story 🔽

People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. Time, in other words, he said, is an illusion.
