There are definitely times when it seems like a waste. Some times I like a random thing like that for an artist to show off or play with the medium.

Like Godzilla being knocked down by a hero should be a splash. Give that big scene some room to make an impact. Imagine if the explosion at the beginning of Akira was only a panel. It would lose any meaning.

You bring up a lot of interesting thoughts about splash pages and storytelling in comics. I love the rollercoaster of comics. Some parts should be smaller and more contemplative, some need that space to breathe. One of my issues this week is a big bombastic piece 1/2

This isn’t the same thing as, say, mathematicians being opposed to calculators or some nonsense comparison. This is more like mathematicians being opposed to people cheating on the test.
