I agree with this. Sometimes we tend to neglect the little things. But the importance of a good meal and a little activity can make a big difference in how you feel.

If today feels a little sluggish, that is normal. A balanced meal and some light activity usually help more than any drastic changes. Keep the day steady and practical. #RealWorldNutrition

I plan to incorporate nutrition as a future health professional by keeping up with the fad diets out there. So when a patient comes to me, asking about how effective it is or if I’d recommend it for them, I’d be able to have an insightful discussion with them.

It’s unfortunate that wellness and diet culture has become like this. Where making a profit on people’s struggles is more important than actually helping others with genuine advice.

For this Thanksgiving, I was away from family. Recalling times when I could spend Thanksgiving with them, the dish I most looked forward to was Lumpia, a Filipino dish we always ate during that time. Hopefully I’ll get to enjoy it over winter break when I go home.

I think it’s important to share resources/articles like these! Whenever we hear the word “processed,” we think of foods that are bad for us and should be avoided. But we should be looking at the degree of processed something is to make informed decisions about our diet.

I chose this article because it gives an overview of the important vitamins and minerals children need in their diet, as well as how to create healthy mealtimes with them. Which can be a fun and educational way for parents to teach their children healthy eating.

I relate to this a little too much. I always tell myself I have things at home I can make. But sometimes I give in, and that fast food that sounded great in the moment wasn’t actually the best idea after eating it. Both for my stomach and my wallet.

A good amount of adulthood is spent giving yourself the "we have food at home" talk over and over again.

What stood out to me in Tom’s story was the nurse at the beginning. Visiting the doctor’s office can be intimidating for many, and making sharp remarks to patients, making them feel uncomfortable to the point where they vow to themselves to never come back saddened me.

I agree that basic self-care is the most important self-care. Self-care doesn’t always need to be anything grand or expensive like a spa day. Or something aesthetic or well planned out. Just putting yourself first can sometimes be the thing we need the most.

If you’re feeling scared or lonely sad or angry or confused or any of the things that might make it harder to put yourself on the top of your list, please do it anyway. Basic self-care is the most important self-care.

Something that I hadn’t known before that I learned this week about obesity is that a defect in Leptin, a hormone produced in our body, is directly linked to obesity. It is important to consider facts like these to avoid making assumptions about others conditions.

The barrier I chose to cite from this week’s reading was Food Preference. The experience I’ve had with this barrier in the past is having a picky preference for what I liked to eat. My diet used to be very high in proteins and carbs, which wasn’t very balanced.

I agree that protein doesn’t matter as much as the media portrays it (of course unless you are the exception mentioned). There are other important nutrients your body needs that the media tends to shy away from talking about, pushing protein as the most important one.
@beh353.bsky.social #beh353
The most important thing to know about protein is that it just doesn't matter very much.

(Exception is if you don't get the minimum, but protein deficiency is uncommon in the US.)

Someone asked why melted cheese tastes so much better...I love these Qs, it's food science we take for granted!
Melting breaks down fats and proteins to release umami + aroma/flavour compounds. The gooey texture spreads to the tastebuds better + the Maillard reaction creates that toasty flavour.

The article I chose was “What can magnesium do for you and how much do you need?” from Harvard Health Publishing. It delves into the mineral that most tend to forget to think about in their diets, Magnesium. As well as goes over potential benefits & good sources of it.

I agree with this sentiment. While food does give us the important energy that we need, that’s not all it should be seen as. It isn’t just fuel, but something you should be able to sit down and enjoy.
@beh353.bsky.social #beh353
“food is just fuel” is a popular saying in the fitness world. and sure, food can be fuel, but it can also be so much more.

food can be a way to connect with other people, cultures, and our memories.

you don’t have to moralize foods or punish yourself for enjoying them.

The fad diet I chose to look more into was the Keto diet. My main takeaway is that Keto diets allow help control blood sugar levels and promote some weight. But long term, it is hard to maintain this diet, and it can put you at risk for some nutrient deficiencies.

I totally agree with the sentiment that there’s room for both nutrients and joy. While it’s important to get all the nutrients your body needs, it’s just as important to eat what you enjoy, and what makes you happy.
@beh353.bsky.social #beh353
"Omg that is full of calories and full of sugar! So bad for you!" Have you ever considered that it is also full of joy, and with the dystopian reality we're currently in that's equally important? There is room for both nutrients and joy. It's possible.

Usually when I make time to eat something for breakfast, my go to is some cereal and milk. To make my go to breakfast more nutritious, I could switch from whole milk to skim or any plant based milk. As for the cereal, I could go for ones with low sugar and higher fiber.

For this week’s 24-hour food recall, I feel like what I could recall was mostly accurate. For the most part, it was easy to do for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But recalling the snacks I had was a little more difficult. Nothing really surprised me about my diet. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

I agree with the fact that just because they’re vitamins doesn’t mean they’re harmless! Too much of anything can be bad for you. It’s also important to recognize the fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamins A, D, E, & K, which stay in your body longer than water soluble ones.
