Kurt Vonnegut is the subject of Tuesday's TGT. Discuss his experience as a soldier or his satirical novels. But I think it's worth discussing his view that there is joy to be had in walking to the local shop for a single envelope. We are dancing animals born to fart around.

Tuesday 11th November Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was born this day 1922 in Indianapolis and became one of the most original and influential writers of the 20th century. Known for his satirical style and science fiction themes, Vonnegut tackled big questions about war, technology, and what it means to be human. His time as a soldier in World War II was very influential. He was captured and held in a slaughterhouse in Dresden when it was bombed by the allies. He narrowly survived and the experience inspired his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, which became a powerful anti-war statement. Over his career, Vonnegut wrote 14 novels, including Player Piano, Cat’s Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions, all filled with sharp wit and concern for humanity. Later in life, Vonnegut shared a story that revealed his unique way of seeing the world: one day, he told his wife he was going out to buy an envelope. She pointed out he could buy a box of 100 and save time. But Vonnegut wanted to walk to the local shop, to talk to people, to notice things. He called this “farting around,” and insisted that humans were “dancing animals”, meant to live life and experience every moment, not just rush through it. This story captures the heart of his writing; deep truths hidden in human experiences. Why did Vonnegut choose to walk to the shop instead of buying envelopes in bulk? His teenage years were blighted by WWII and he used music as an escape from the chaos around him. He later trained in classical composition, but found his true calling in the world of film. Be began composing for Italian film, mostly comedies which he found simple. However his career changed when he moved to Hollywood to work his school friend Sergio Leone. Together they created a very distinctive score to Leone’s film A Fistful of Dollars and a new subgenre of film, the Spaghetti Western.
