I will be glad to see ATC being paid to be on the job again solely because the potential for loss of life is so very high, but I wish I could say that I'm surprised that Senate Democrats have disappointed me yet again by failing to follow through on their plan.

After I vote I make a point of thanking everyone running the polls; I'm sure it's a long day that's boring and exciting by turns.

In the past, I have made it Extra Weird by saying "thank you for your service" (usually reserved for active or former military), which just seems to confuse everyone.

#LastFourWatched for the week:

Maggie (2015), a small fave, Schwarzenegger all-timer,

Cure (1997), a big favorite

Pyewacket (2017), um, maybe I need to rewatch

Black Phone 2 (2025), not too shabby

I've been a loyal reader of tor\.com since it launched but today is the goddamn last straw. I'm sick of the "five X that Y" listicles and the constant! fucking! spoilers!

I'm done.

Watched CURE (1997) again and I am less confused (I now know that last time, I did not recognize Fumie Takabe every time I saw her) but still puzzling over locations and events.

I'm happy to just jump in a third time, but I'd also accept some outside help.

Prompted by someone else waiting for critics to eat some crow, I'm reminded that it's 15 years since The New Yorker's review of KICK ASS made me so mad that I stopped reading the magazine altogether

Hadn't heard of No Telling!

I saw Birth/Rebirth in theaters on a few hours' notice and I'm so glad, everyone involved in it did an incredible job (though I would single out Marin Ireland: as our Frankenstein, rather than chewing scenery, she's clinical and flat in a MOST interesting way).
If you want some more Frankenstein flavored fare after you've watched del Toro's adaptation, I have to suggest that you seek out No Telling (1991), Depraved (2019), and Birth/Rebirth (2023). These are three extremely original riffs on the material and some of the finest in my opinion.

the focus is on "do you want sympathy or advice?" but I would pay cash money to be able to get someone's attention for sixty seconds to contextualize something dumb I said to them two years ago and not have them react in any way

Looking forward to seeing THE MOTHER, THE MENACER AND ME again — it was a nice surprise that I streamed from Popcorn Frights earlier this year.

Nightmares Film Festival in Columbus was my first festival experience and is still a big favorite, even as I've expanded into a number of others.

In an early scene in Poltergeist (1982), Craig T Nelson is smoking weed with JoBeth Williams and half-watching A Guy Named Joe (1943) — so Poltergeist is now older than "Joe" was when it was released.
