Some context for my comment above about higher ed as a valuable export: In dollar terms, last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined.

This colloquy between @profmmurray.bsky.social and @justinwolfers.bsky.social, which took place before the Department of Homeland Security blocked Harvard University from enrolling international students, is newly relevant:
It's a rich irony that a President who is obsessed by the trade balance is blocking one of our best exports: American higher ed.

International students pay fees, create high-paying jobs, learn ideas, and spread them globally.

But they can't come without reliable visas.

Nobody knows how this is all going to play out. Maybe the stock market drop spooks Trump into backing off. Maybe the Fed cuts a lot and housing booms. But if you're my age and have kids/a mortgage, it's worth thinking about how you'd handle a recession, the prospect of job loss, etc.

Ok #taxtwitter / #taxsky anyone with experience and interested in a potential lead? backup withholding applied to real estate sales... BUT, LLC that sold the property is owned by a self-dircted IRA. Pretty sure a 990-T needs to be prepared and filed to claim a refund of the backup withholding.
