Friendly, daily reminder to friends and colleagues who work in the nonprofit space that this one is dangerously overbroad, and could do damage well beyond the intended targets presented on first blush.

Call your reps and Senators.
Huge, huge thanks to @matthewcort.land and @celestepewter.bsky.social for the resources they have provided here on bluesky on HR 9495. Just emailed this to the 975 subscribers on my mailing list

Pew's findings paint a concerning picture of the online news landscape. The widespread dominance of conservative male voices in the news content creator world tilts public discourse toward reactionary right wing narratives, which are then boosted by algorithms that reward sensationalism and outrage

Troubled by election post mortems that stray from failures to tap into the strongest set of voter concerns (i.e., perceived neglect of inflation relief) and instead re-marginalizing communities welcomed into the coalition.

You can be inclusive while focusing on core concerns. No sacrifices needed.

Anyone who boils this one down to antisemitism and anti-Israel lacks the political imagination to understand this can cripple any nonprofit.

If your rep voted for it on the last pass, give them a call and make your case.
The “nonprofit killer” bill is coming back is likely to pass unless many of the 52 Democrats who support it flip. Read @hurwitz.bsky.social on how “material support” aimed at Palestinian protestors could gut all news/NGOs www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Building off a bipartisan push to punish pro-Palestine protesters, Trump has a broad crackdown ready to implement—including deportations.

Had a good conversation in Poli Comm yesterday about the fallacy of mandates in politics.

On cue, < 50% on the popular.

If you’re in the majority, history tells us compromise is it. The minority has plenty of ground to be a robust opposition with valid viewpoints.

See 1992-1994 for reference.
Per the Cook Political Report, Trump has just fallen below 50% of the popular vote. With 152.7M votes counted (and some more to come.)
🟥 Trump 49.99%
🟦 Harris 48.22%.

Life comes at us fast 😉
I started teaching during my 2nd year of graduate school, which means I was able to just write—*accurately*—in a recommendation letter that a student is near the top I’ve worked with "in nearly 20 years of teaching" & now I’m going to crawl into a corner & whither to dust ok byyyyye

One of the best reads in a week of bad takes in post mortem . . .
Governor Andy Beshear, in a Trump +30 state, gives advice to Democrats: Do not throw LGBTQ+ people under the bus, it will not work.

His advice to dems: Lead on your values.

This man ran on a fully inclusive campaign in 2023 and won. He received the same kind of ads Harris did.

Best news this week.

Pushback is essential.

More importantly, keeping corrosive, insipid defunding of nonprofits doing essential work in communities off the table in general is good news.

So very many good colleagues working on echo chambers and right wing media studies.

If you’re up for some pre-game reading, it’s out here.

Great, comprehensive thread.
A thread on birthright citizenship I wrote in 2018, that unfortunately remains relevant.

I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester.

Who was Wong Kim Ark? 1/
