This is part of the reason why I have suspended all travel to the United States indefinitely. A Swiss teacher wanted to celebrate her birthday in New York with friends but instead was detained, shackled, and sent off to a detention center in New Jersey.

No thanks!

After seeing this, we literally used ChatGPT to generate the numbers by asking what the "effective tariff rate" was. Took about three minutes. Do you think the Trump administration used ChatGPT to calculate all these numbers? www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/b...
How Are Trump’s Tariff Rates Calculated?
The answer appears to begin with the total trade deficit America runs with its trading partners.

Use the portal to PRAISE TEACHERS.

Fill it with praise!
Hey everyone -- Moms of Liberty and Dept of Education launched a snitch line portal today to rat out teachers and anyone promoting anything DEI.

FLOOD THE PORTAL

Spam the hell out of it.

Pass it on! It works!

I've restarted my long-time blog on teaching -- but mostly as a respository of developing thoughts, in short posts. Which I will share here, for any teachers interested.

Anecdotal city pair mobility thread, 🇳🇱 vs. 🇺🇸

Here are two city pairs, both about 11-15mi / 18-14km apart, total combined population about 300-400k.

I'll compare how you drive, ride transit, and bike between the cities.

This was super interesting, and extremely entertaining. Anyone who can bring in the Treaty of Torsdesillas, the Habsburg jaw, and Darth Vader, all within a few minutes, is worth a listen. And don't be misled by the "clean-energy" focus--it's really an analysis of the problem of corporate power.
Today on Volts: I talk with the estimable Cory Doctorow about enshittification (the inevitable rot & customer exploitation of tech platforms) and how it might manifest in clean-energy tech, which will soon be running our vehicles and homes. Much to worry about!

Can we avoid the enshittification of clean-energy tech?
Cory Doctorow describes how software platform technologies go wrong and what it might look like when our homes and vehicles are on those platforms.

This is exactly why, I argue, we need to stop talking about the need to "reduce emissions" and start talking about the need to "phase out fossil fuels."
