Ed is right about the labor issue, and artists, who mostly already couldn't make it, are losing the last of the paying work they had, from theft.

But he consistently misses the larger issue: AI can't actually replace artists at even close to the level of quality and creativity.
AI types like to argue that image models - like Google’s new one yesterday - will make illustrators more efficient, or will actually create *more* work for the best artists.

But what they will really do is put artists out of work, and do so unfairly.

I wish so much I didn't live in the idiocracy timeline where wilful ignorance and bigotry is valued over education and learning.

This is hilarious. And unsurprising for all of us who are trained in the humanities.

STEM only quantitative supremacists don't have a clue about the vast fields of knowledge that are *very* relevant to the things that are possible and the things they don't know aren't possible that they want to do.
Ironically the humanities are gonna bring down AI 😂
Looks like LLMs are *very* vulnerable to attack via poetic allusion: "curated poetic prompts yielded high attack-success rates (ASR), with some providers exceeding 90% ..."

Really, you don't say. All the ghouls who threatened to leave haven't already packed up?

Who could have predicted?
Big Apple billionaire John Catsimatidis planned to move his business to New Jersey if Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor. Now he’s reconsidering.

No, it can't. JFC why is every single pseudoscience that was debunked 25-150 years ago coming back?

This ridiculous, wasteful, and harmful nonsense is what happens when techbros who only had the narrowest of STEM educations get put in charge of things. They reinvent bunk and think they're geniuses.

I like this, what a great idea.
A practice I began keeping about 20 years ago has been a font of evergreen learning, and it's simple:

Every time I hear a person I respect use a term or technical phrase whose full meaning escapes me, I note it.

Every few months, I go thru that list, and track down straight-forward explanations.

"In less than 36 hours since we announced that we will be sending payments to disabled SNAP recipients in the South—$100 to individuals and $250 to households—we have received more than 12,400 applications, totaling $2.7 million in requests." - they have to close the form tomorrow... no way to cover
We are offering one time payments to disabled folks in the South who will not receive their SNAP benefits this month. If you need help, please find more information and details at ndsdj.org/snaphelp.

If you’d like to donate to the fund, go to ndsdj.org/snapdonate

Sundays my way.

First online session since crushing fall COOP. Got up very late, did chores, watched TV, ate delicious leftovers, had a cup of hot cocoa, took a nap, max late regged the Sunday special tournaments at 9pm (4 MTTs total).

1 cash, 1 ft, 1 win!

Fun times! 🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺

If I cared the slightest bit about baseball, this would be a great day for me as someone from Los Angeles currently living in Toronto.

But I don't, so it's just unpleasantly loud and crowded lol.

#FoodBankChallenge

Can we get to $5000 to start? With SNAP running out in Nov if the shutdown continues, more folks will be turning to food banks - which are already struggling since the administration cut $500 MILLION in deliveries back in the spring.

My friend told me that her 14 year old son started doing laundry on Sundays for some of his elderly neighbors. He doesn't charge for the labor. And now he is the most popular person in the building and has non stop pies, cookies, and cake. The 14 year old should be our model of modern masculinity.

Counterpoint: no.

There's a time and a place for identifying leaks, and before, during, and after a session is not it.

Perfectionism is the opposite of helpful; it's debilitating, and was the biggest thing holding me back for years.

It's a game. Enjoy crushing and study later.

I think there are basically only two positions in the debate about AI:

1) I have a brain and/or I'm an artist, I don't want to give them up, & f copyright theft
2) I know nothing about language, cognition, or critical thinking and I have no interest in learning, so holy cow it's transformational!
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

Too tired to do much of a write up, but back from another series. Fall results continue to be consistent "despite" very low "volume."

LIVE
Fall ring events: 11
FTs/Cashes: 3/3
ROI: 49%

ONLINE
Stars/ACR series events: 61
Wins/FTs/Cashes: 2/8/17
ROI: 99%

Downswings are a choice!

Time for a break!

I wanted to see how I'm doing compared to the "top" regs/pros in Ontario that I play with all the time.

One lost so much in the last week (prob over $10k) they set their stats to private a few days ago. But I was able to find the rest.

Pretty happy with my results!

I used to think this.

Then I started playing every hand trying to figure out the best strategy to get my opponent, regardless of skill level, to make mistakes against me.

And now I have fun playing against everyone.

And it's super duper fun playing soft games with a huge ROI!

It was a good day.

It's been a great week.

But, you know, I'm just a rec and it's super low volume, so, like always, I must just be lucky! 🤣📈

Oooops I did it again!

Sick week hahahahaha.

Not only is autism not a problem, much less one that needs to be solved, but I'm gonna say what no one else probably will:

Autistic people are being targeted because they are the future and the biggest threat to those currently in power.

Read Bulter's Parable of the Sower if this is puzzling.
I’m autistic. Not because of Tylenol.
Not because of vaccines.
Not because of some headline.
I’m autistic because that’s how
my brain works. Stop treating us
like a problem. Start listening to us.

What stage of science/academia are we in when people think that "identical" research papers, and not ones with novel ideas and perspectives, are actually publishable?

The cultural elevation of group-think, crockery, and hallucinations as success is weird and wild.
September 23, 2025 at 10:31 PM
🤦
Context-sensitive processing is (usually) exactly something people can do, but not AI 🙃
I disagree. That was not my experimental evidence building rare-disease patients models that had about 50% accuracy but diagnosed 98% faster than the current US health system. Nor is it the case with the speech recognition system on your phone that you used today.

Day 5 of COOP. Really not my day even though there were two 8 game events, which are probably the ones I have the biggest edge in. But, as it sometimes happens, I just pretty much couldn't win a hand tonight in limit.

5 events played, 1 cash (but 2/5 were Total KOs where I won more than the buyin).
Day 4 of COOP (plus bonus NLO8 OSS on ACR):

- 3/4 sessions in profit (about -$200 on losing session)
- 16 series events
- 4 final tables (2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th)
- Currently 5th on COOP leaderboard while playing about 1/4 to 1/3 of the events of the leader/all the regs
- About +$1100
Day 2 of COOP. Wasn't feeling great, so after running ridic bad for the last hour cancelled my plans to play another $700 in buyins and kept my risk for the day to $150.

Played 3 events, cashed 2 (one is a phase, made day 2 with a big stack), and took 4th in the $20 Sunday Starter for $830.
