With more than 27 million pink salmon anticipated to return to Puget Sound and the Fraser River, NW Washington fishers will have plenty of chances to catch fish out in the sea and river. However, salmon processors could be overwhelmed if the projected run materializes.

This impact on fisheries management would be severe if this goes through as planned.

One of the outcomes of Trump’s chaos is that we are all learning how many important roles federal agencies & employees play.
Honestly we should have had these previews without having to cut the programs first.

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies.

There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

Unlike wind and solar, ocean waves are a potential source of always-on power.

And one company is aiming to harness power from those waves with a pilot project at the Port of Los Angeles.
The first wave energy project in the U.S. is coming to Los Angeles - Marketplace
Solar and wind energy don't work all the time. A pilot project in LA is testing if constant ocean waves can fill the sustainable energy gap.

This is true.

It’s important to remember that Congress *gave away* its tariff power.
It doesn’t matter. Congress could simply decide Trump doesn’t have tariff authority anymore by passing a law tomorrow: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
There's no northern-border problem, no fentanyl, and therefore the entire rationale for tariffs is, as everyone knows, a vain delusion beyond the explication of any economic knowledge. And as such they're probably illegal -- Krugman

I always find it helpful to remember tariffs end in FFS
No-one has yet refuted the simplest argument about tariffs: Our tariffs will lead to retaliatory tariffs.

So whatever theory you might have that our tariffs help us at their expense also teaches you that their retaliation will undo whatever gains you're expecting. We both end up isolated & poorer.

Seafood is constantly at the whims of geopolitics, but sometimes they intersect in interesting ways. Myself, John Fiorillo and Hanna Gezelius discuss Greenland, RFK, Jr. and the potential for #aquaculture in Alaska on the latest IntraFish Media podcast.

If confirmed, RFK Jr. will be the most powerful cabinet member to hold so many seafood-specific views -- many of them misleading, or downright odd.

The seafood industry was already buckling up for an interesting four years, but it could get even more interesting.
