Archaeologists searching for the remains of a 400-year-old castle have unexpectedly found evidence of an 8,000-year-old settlement.
Hoping to find the ruins of Derrygonnelly Castle in County Fermanagh, they also discovered artefacts dating back to the Mesolithic period.

A bog body found in #Ireland, previously thought to be a male, has actually been confirmed to be female. Evidence shows her throat was slit and she was decapitated before being thrown into the bog sometime between the 4th and 1st century BCE. Researchers believe she may have been a human sacrifice.

While the body was well preserved, the skull was absent and was not recovered. Cut marks on the neck vertebrae indicate the cause of death as an intentional decapitation in the bog. This may be part of a pattern of ritual and sacrifice during the Iron Age period.
