Common wisdom is that a "likable" protagonist (as opposed to "interesting") has to SAVE THE CAT to earn the audience's affection, but you can get the same amount of affection by showing them persisting bravely in the face of bullying, poverty, or heartbreaking loss. Audiences see themselves in that.
