Astronomers at Tsinghua University; love galaxies; learning how to build a 6.5m telescope now
I've heard some disturbing news that a Chinese student's post-doc offer was revoked by a Canadian institute (I believe it is Herzberg) due to "pressure from the U.S. government."

Two things: 1. We are keeping a list; 2. It would be nice to let us know before our students apply.

If you are at the IAU Symposium #396 for Massive Galaxies at Naples, my student Xiaoya is giving a talk on Thu!

I know everyone is excited about the high-z stuff, but there is more to understand in the halos of our local giants. And Xiaoya did a great job pointing in an interesting direction!

Had a great hackweek at Santa Cruz with my students!

The work is intense, but Santa Cruz always has a way to make you chill 😃

This is such a beautiful visualization that it makes me read about exoplanets again!
NEW WORK! ✨

I got to create this 2-page spread for an article in @sciam.bsky.social on the puzzling lack of worlds outside our solar system in a certain size range; the "Radius Gap."

Visualizing several hundred exoplanets as a polar plot + contours.

This is already a good list! I hope we can gradually get the good vibe back for astronomers under the BlueSky...
Updated to include the Atacama telescope in Spanish 🔭

Beijing's spring is usually not very pleasant. But this week seems to be an exception.

I am sure this won't hurt my productivity...

Is this because a lot of LLM people are "harvesting" training data?
... aaand we're back. I'd like to once again iterate the point that the problems we have been experiencing are entirely of technical nature. Spikes in usage request by bots seem to be the cause of our trouble, so this is not connected to any particular choice of platform.

Had a nice break in Hong Kong. Now it is time to back to work.

Today I learned that there is a popular lemon tea in Hong Kong called the "VLT" 😂

Not gonna lie. This is my happiest moment of 2025...so far...

I really don't understand this determination to use the wrong term 😂

It is a simple fact that this is not the "Lunar New Year"...

Call it whatever you like, but why use the wrong term? Especially when there are a lot of people who still rely on an actual lunar calendar (e.g., Islamic calendar)...

For many, the Lunar New Year is a time to reflect on people they have lost. But it's also a time to set intentions and welcome the new energy of the future.

Have you ever seen the traditional way of making popcorn in China?

Here is a demonstration by my old man...who replaces the firecrackers with popcorn.

The BOOM is much louder in person 😂

Not sure who the "adversaries" are, but here I saw my colleagues discussed the news in a worrying tone...it affects many Chinese students in the U.S. and collaborations. I think this is the time, at least for folks working in fundamental research, to view this as a universal threat to all of us.
Our adversaries must be laughing at USA's sudden demise in scientific leadership

What the f is going on in the U.S???
I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

Hi, Everyone; this is Limpy.

Limpy has one functional leg. But it is Ok, because Limpy has been getting free food for the last three years on my parents' apartment's balcony.

Happy New Year from Kyoto! 💥💥💥

I wish 2025 will be less crazier than 2024 for all of us!

So I won this "Good Educator & Friend of the Students" award this year.

I am deeply humbled by this recognition...but maybe I should choose a different photo if I know it is going to be used in the official announcement 😂

Semester done!

And the tradition of giving out by
@emsque.bsky.social as parting gifts continues.

I aim to use my class to ensure they keep printing the Chinese version.

Prof. Josh Speagle from Toronto dropped by today and gave us an atypical astronomy talk on why we should have faith in interpretable AI's application in astronomy.

It was a great talk with the appropriate amount of memes😂

All the students in my class were born after the release of the Fellowship of the Ring, therefore...many of them do not understand this meme...

This saddens me every year...
