Astronomers at Tsinghua University; love galaxies; learning how to build a 6.5m telescope now
Important milestone achieved for our project - MUltiplexed Survey Telescope: we have STICKER now!

If you are at the IAU Symposium #396 for Massive Galaxies at Naples, my student Xiaoya is giving a talk on Thu!

I know everyone is excited about the high-z stuff, but there is more to understand in the halos of our local giants. And Xiaoya did a great job pointing in an interesting direction!

Had a great hackweek at Santa Cruz with my students!

The work is intense, but Santa Cruz always has a way to make you chill 😃

Beijing's spring is usually not very pleasant. But this week seems to be an exception.

I am sure this won't hurt my productivity...

Had a nice break in Hong Kong. Now it is time to back to work.

Today I learned that there is a popular lemon tea in Hong Kong called the "VLT" 😂

Not gonna lie. This is my happiest moment of 2025...so far...

Understand. Here is my student's cat...

Meanwhile, DeepSeek is literally telling people: I am having a lot of traffic today, please try to use ChatGPT for now 😂

Have you ever seen the traditional way of making popcorn in China?

Here is a demonstration by my old man...who replaces the firecrackers with popcorn.

The BOOM is much louder in person 😂

Hi, Everyone; this is Limpy.

Limpy has one functional leg. But it is Ok, because Limpy has been getting free food for the last three years on my parents' apartment's balcony.

Wish everyone a happy year of SNAKEEEEE!

Happy New Year from Kyoto! 💥💥💥

I wish 2025 will be less crazier than 2024 for all of us!
December 31, 2024 at 4:05 PM
So I won this "Good Educator & Friend of the Students" award this year.

I am deeply humbled by this recognition...but maybe I should choose a different photo if I know it is going to be used in the official announcement 😂

Semester done!

And the tradition of giving out by
@emsque.bsky.social as parting gifts continues.

I aim to use my class to ensure they keep printing the Chinese version.

Prof. Josh Speagle from Toronto dropped by today and gave us an atypical astronomy talk on why we should have faith in interpretable AI's application in astronomy.

It was a great talk with the appropriate amount of memes😂

All the students in my class were born after the release of the Fellowship of the Ring, therefore...many of them do not understand this meme...

This saddens me every year...

Beijing looks quite lovely in today's chilling air.
December 7, 2024 at 4:34 PM
We thoroughly enjoyed your visit!

Taking students to Xinglong to visit some telescopes on a perfectly crispy winter day.
November 30, 2024 at 3:16 PM
Given the recent influx of astronomers here, I feel like I should also post more.

Here is a 1:10 scale model of our MUltiplexed Survey Telescope (MUST), a 6.5-meter telescope for spectroscopic survey...and its first on-site "staff".
November 25, 2024 at 2:01 PM
And so it begins...
November 20, 2024 at 5:06 PM
[8/8] I want to end with this message from my old slides: "We are building it".

A reminder: the U.S. P5 report supports the R&D of a "Spec-S5" project for a next-gen spectroscopic survey facility.

MUST is a similar "Spec-S5" class project.

And, we are building it, right now!
January 23, 2024 at 2:58 PM
[7/N] Another focus of 2024 will be the design of MUST's spectrograph. We will need 30 of them eventually!

On this end, we need all the help we can get, from official collaborators to vendors, advisors, and even just some "good samaritans".

Please reach out if you are interested!
