The Blob. 1988. Almost 40 yrs old and the practical FX are still incredible. It was a team of 33 that made the ‘blob’ with methyl cellulose (thickening agent) and just dumped it on the actors like this. Even the best CGI still looks so obviously fake with actors screaming at a green wall.

I saw that tour. 2003. Same vibes — felt like a renaissance after the 90s. Had no clue Maiden were gonna play “Revelations” that night — I think the first time since LaD — and ngl I got a little choked up 🥲

So much fun — you could tell the precise moment when the crowd were collectively lifted, as soon as he started “Man on the Silver Mountain” and then broke into all his Rainbow and Sabbath classics. And of course Holy Diver and Rainbow in the Dark — but it was like people had been *starved* 🤣

You have to wonder whether modern audiences simply don’t watch older films — and so, therefore, they don’t have anything to compare new FX with old.

For real. I mean look at this — a film that cost $10M in 1988 (that’s $25M today) and let’s be honest, if this was done with CGI now it would look like a joke and probably cost $100M.

And to think Paris came out 16 years *after* London. Special FX should be getting better over time, but at some point we all just flatlined when this became the norm

Yeah true, but it’s Paddington. Not a mountain lion chasing you up a tree 🤪

I think this happens a lot — I never saw Furiosa on the big screen, but on a 4K TV, up close, oh damn… everything shot on digital, with digital backgrounds, starts to look cheap. There is something distinct between movies shot on film with actual photography versus digital films and CGI in post prod

There’s a few scenes in Prey (Predator sequel) with CGI animals and it occurs to me that they haven’t quite figured out how to capture the movement of an animal, without it looking like a cartoon, and fur. CGI fur is so bad. I’m almost thinking a film should either avoid it or use trained animals.

If they only get 30 mins opening for Maiden next year… well, the setlist writes itself 😅

CGI animals always look bad — I’ll be honest, the film was too reliant on CGI even for backgrounds, the sky, etc and it makes me wonder if watching it on Netflix on a 4K TV exposes the CGI more than seeing in in a theater on a projector

The funniest thing about all of this is that Anthrax are still playing that same set list today
