Transcribing English inquest records with some annotations, 1888-89 North East Middlesex coroner's district. Pals with Emma and Molly. Learning astrophotography for the peace and quiet of it. Views are my own.
Pinned
A description of the new NE Middlesex coroner's district in London Gazette May 1888 as it existed until 1894. Its first coroner, Dr. Roderick Macdonald, won election in June and served until his death in March 1894. By the end of 1888, probably about 500 inquests had been held.

Every book of history involving original research should be accompanied by a 2nd vol where the historian relates the false starts, twists & turns etc the research took before it finally got its ultimate framing/shape. Not only is this fascinating it’s also fundamental to the historian’s craft(ing).

So you find yourself doomscrolling through Bluesky and feeling more and more downhearted and then up pops an engrossing thread that a fave scholar has taken the trouble to put together and suddenly the world looks a little brighter. Thanks, @peteorford.bsky.social!
Not one, but two early editions of Dombey and Son arrived in the post. Both published in Dickens's lifetime, they tell a story of his branding and marketing which contributed to his success. 1/

A reviewer bagged on Eco for looking pretentious on this cover, but his pipe is a corncob, not very grandiose imo.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Bought this book at an exhibition at The Art Institute back in the 90s. I don't think I've seen it since until today. I like Marie Spartali here from 1870 as she looks lost in thought.

None of them have any idea what the Librarian of Congress does. For example, there’s no children’s section because it’s a research library.
Reporter: The president fired the Librarian of Congress. Why?

Leavitt: There were quite concerning things she had done at the Library of Congress in the pursuit of DEI and putting inappropriate books in the library for children.

It's important to understand the position of the US government in this case. They are arguing no court can have habeas corpus jurisdiction while they are randomly moving political prisoners about the country.

These are the actions of a secret police. These are the actions of a Gestapo.
