A company on Facebook is advertising a "love shower" for Mother's Day, which consists of a mechanism blasting card-sized paper all over the place, because nothing says "love" like making yet another mess around the house for your mom to clean up

Working with Man of Steel on in the background. I know there's a lot of hate for this movie, but there's something about it that just clicks for me. It's one of my "comfort food" movies - you know, the ones you put on when you need some emotional support in the background?

For my fall syllabi: "If you fail to attend class and demonstrate a complete lack of knowledge about the writing skills I've been teaching, you forfeit constructive feedback, office hours wherein you can get "caught up" on content from the writing lectures, or any other writing assistance from me."

Listening to the soundtrack to Challengers by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Firstly, it's awesome. Secondly, if you'd have told me 30 years ago that the guy who made Pretty Hate Machine was going to score a movie about tennis in the far future, I'd have laughed in your face.

All of my meetings with the dean seem to go like this. I am sure she is happy that we have our last meeting of the semester this week. #AcademicSky

Told my friend Brooke about feeling uncomfortable sometimes as a journalist among academics and she was like “Yeah it’s true that academics think that journalists are unserious dilettantes. But on the other hand, journalists make the jerk-off gesture every time an academic talks.”

Me: we all have the same 25 hours

Friend: you mean 24 hours?

Me, realizing my friend can’t afford the secret 25th hour: yes

I repainted my goggles just in time for the #steampunk event this past weekend! And I’m posting for endorphin hits, banking on the inexorable lovability of #steampunkgoggles. Why? I learned that a steampunk course I was teaching for a community org got cancelled. Hiding tears behind dark lenses.

there is a very short leap from “hey let me casually take some pictures of birds with this inexpensive zoom lens” to “what do i need to sell to afford this ultra-telephoto lens so i can get a proper close up of the red-tailed hawk that occasionally takes a perch in the neighbor’s tree”

and don't get me started about our ORBITAL POSITION, folks. they call where we are the 'goldilocks zone' as if to make fun of their OWN explanation that earth just happens to be "not to cold, and not too hot". They're LAUGHING at us!

In the late 1990s / early 2000s every home had a halogen floor lamp that could light a room, but when tipped over would burn down your house. That's the crucible that created Gen X / Millennials.

I’m away from home by myself for the first time since I can’t remember when. Pre-Covid. Pre-2016. I think 2014 was my last solo trip. I feel untethered, and yet this used to be normal. It feels wildly strange. And wonderful.

Today, I’m giving two talks on #steampunk at the Telus Spark Science Centre in #yyc. It’s been around 15 years since I started researching steampunk, and Twitter was a big part of the first leg of that journey. Hoping Blue Sky can be a big part of the next leg.

The first post is like a journal you haven’t written in. I always used to agonize over what to write in journals. Now I just go for it, and I just realized the same is true of a new social media.
