In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, several teachers across the country criticized the political firebrand on social media. Some people now want them fired for it.

Read this piece on Moyers as your July 4 celebration. Civic Duty?
It says everything about where we are but also about what we must do.
Few people have embodied the best of journalism—its ability to cut through BS, its capacity to uplift those who’ve been wronged, its burning appetite to tell the stories people need to know—like Bill Moyers.

We’ve never needed him more, writes @monikab.bsky.social.
The Bill Moyers that obituaries missed
The “secular preacher” of TV journalism was also a ferocious critic of corrupt politicians and corporate titans—and the spineless media that enable them.

A tremendous affront to hard working Americans. We must resolve to make Independence Day a commitment to our independence from oligarchs who don’t believe in democracy. Organize. Organize. Organize.
This bill will remove healthcare for 17M people, slash food assistance for 22M, shutter hundreds of hospitals, defund higher education, cut jobs, target immigrant communities and explode the national debt—all for tax breaks to the ultra-rich. www.aft.org/press-releas...

If you think it can’t happen here, remember that it already did. In 1942 soldiers came with rifles to our home and ordered us out. They put us in internment camps. Most of us were citizens.

While we wait for the Supreme Court to rule in a critical redistricting case from Louisiana, this is what the GOP is up to in Texas and Ohio. Remember the GOP's plan is to make it harder for you to vote and easier for them to cheat.

I think @chicagosmayor.bsky.social would be right to veto this. I’m all for public safety but a curfew anywhere w/just 30 mins. notice sounds Trumpian to me & unlikely to make us safer.
The Chicago City Council voted 27-22 to allow CPD to impose a curfew anywhere in the city and begin enforcing it with just 30 minutes notice.

Chima Ikoro, community engagement editor at @southsideweekly.bsky.social, talks about the impact of these curfews.

So this is a sound proposal—rational and fair to all. Why won’t IL lawmakers do it, I wonder??? Hmm. Well, for starters, they need to hear from us that we demand fairness.

Illinois is leaving money on the table with structurally unsound tax policy
The state should be taxing all consumer services, as Iowa and Wisconsin do, to raise much-needed revenue.

Growing up in a mostly white suburb of Detroit, I knew virtually nothing about Juneteenth. When I moved to Chicago - the greatest frigging city in the world to quote @mayorofchicago.bsky.social - I learned the meaning of this holiday and what joy & fun & history it brings. Happy Juneteenth all!
Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and commit to continuing the fight for inclusivity, equity, and the common good. #CelebrateFreedom
