A family has handed over a 13th century book to the National Library of Norway. Conservator Chiara Palandri says its pages were made of calfskin parchment and that the cover appears to be hairy sealskin. The strap to hold the book together is thought to have been made from reindeer hide.
Eight pages bound in furry seal skin may be Norway's oldest book
The little book is so rare that the National Library of Norway is bringing in experts from around the world to learn more.

☞☞ Hands-on reading ☜☜

The manicules in #rarebooks are fantastically diverse. Some are tiny & discreet, others take up half the margin; some have flowing sleeves, or even little faces.

They’re glimpses into the personality of readers/scribes highlighting passages worth reading.

Apparently wearing a raspberry beret (the kind you find in a second hand store), this cheeky red-crested, tiny-tongued tessellated serpent features on a mid 4th century #Roman mosaic from Dorchester

Found in Durngate Street in 1905, it's now in @dorsetmuseum.bsky.social

On this feast of the Belgians, let's recall Belgis, mighty capital of the 'realme des belges', founded by Bavo, cousin of Priam, five winters after Troy’s burning, when Abdon judged Israel. 🏰🇧🇪

Oh yeah, looked at loads and loads of (virtual) stuff for our list of digitized Middle Dutch manuscripts and printed books and - it - is - definitely - worth - it! (no colleagues were harmed in this experiment) #lookingatstuff
Earlier today, I was thinking: "My research methodology is simply looking at lots of stuff" - and now Devin has thought the same thing!

I love looking at lots of stuff. My colleagues who fetch the books - not so much 😅
This is simply to begin learning more about our collection. I always try to bring things by just looking at lots of stuff. I like to let observations and patterns slowly emerge. I text friends questions, smell some books, and just dig in.
