Mooi in deze context is ook de bekende Ruusbroecminiatuur. De auteur schrijft met een stilus op een wastablet, een jongere kopiist op een perkamenten blad met pen en inkt.

On this feast of the Belgians, let's recall Belgis, mighty capital of the 'realme des belges', founded by Bavo, cousin of Priam, five winters after Troy’s burning, when Abdon judged Israel. 🏰🇧🇪

A Middle Dutch text, copied as an appendix to Boendale's chronicle, describes how #Mechelen requested aid fromJan III of Brabant and nearby cities, which appeals went largely unfulfilled. Despite the setbacks, the poem hopefully emphasizes the need for unity and resilience in the face of disaster.

#OTD in 1342 a devastating fire broke out in #Mechelen, raging for two days. Over 800 houses were lost and some 400 people perished. Ironically, centuries later, the Mechelaars earned the nickname 'Maneblussers' ('moon extinguishers') after mistaking moonlight on the cathedral for another blaze.

Left: *Life hack from the 15th century*

Praise the Lord for 5 hours,
Work for 7,
Sleep for 7,
Get some fresh air for 2,
Spend 3 enjoying food
And time will simply slip away.

Right: *Eight-Hour Day banner, 1856*

Turns out, the Middle Ages were ahead of the curve!

Happy #LabourDay! 🎈

Monday | The barren fig tree.
"And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

🌹💌 #ValentinesDay throwback to 1564, when Claes van Bronchorst, canon at Voorne, scribbled 'Amor vincit omnia (Love conquers all) in a manuscript (KB, ms. 130 B 21).

Virgil’s Eclogues continues: 'nos et cedamus amori'—so why shouldn’t we give in to love too?

The calendar in the missal's first section (Brussels, KBR 9217) suggests ties to the Diocese of Liège. Early illustrations seem to originate in the Meuse region (possibly Sint-Truiden). However, the section now kept in The Hague was completed in 1366, by Laurentius of Antwerp in Ghent. 4/8
