Today's Saturday sketch. We've had a couple of Prairie Falcons hanging out lately. When a happy falcon fluffs out its little chin beard it's just the cutest thing in the entire world. 🎨🪶🐡

A pied-billed grebe navigates a tricky part of the shallows in the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in Portland, Oregon. Horizontal image, 2:1 aspect ratio. The grebe is just slightly above and to the left of frame center, traveling right-to-left across the frame. It's looking back over its shoulder slightly, as if it were keeping an eye on the cameraman. The grebe is brown and gray, with a medium length curved neck. The beak is grey-white with a distinct, thick black band about a third the way up from the tip. The eye is black, surrounded by a white ring. The bird is navigating a stretch of shallow water through what appears to be a thicket of long dead saplings, bleached almost white and snapped off short near the water line by time and tide, wind and sun.

A rare one tonight: the elusive Ocellated Crake near Salitre #CostaRica

In the rail family, these birds are found usually in native savanna habitat in the Americas. There's an area in central Costa Rica that is a good spot for these and a friend helped us get some nice views.

This is Wrendo. He arrived in the yard last year in a horrible state, with what looked like tar on his breast, and he couldn’t fly more than a few feet. He’s now recovered and raising a family, and there’s nothing more joyful than hearing him sing.
