I think some in the Senate have convinced themselves that the backlash to folding will be limited to “the left” and therefore ignorable.

i think the us military, even if trump is able to purge senior leaders, is quite unlikely to go along with an autogolpe but definitely do not want to find out
pretty unsettling to ponder whether or not The Troops would obey an illegal order to disperse or arrest Congress. but that's where we're at
