The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

What Trump is doing in California is right out of the authoritarian playbook. Violence is never acceptable — period. But people have the right to peaceful protest.

Whenever I have to go out (and I don’t feel like it) I imagine there’s a group of birds who are “people watchers” that have been waiting their whole bird lives to spot an introvert in the wild and that they’ll be telling their bird friends about me for years and it kinda helps

Experiences like this person's matter deeply if we want to have any hope of winning. Does a one-day mobilization, however large, dislodge Trump & co. from power? Of course not. But if it helps boost the morale of people who previously felt disconnected or hopeless, that in itself has major value.
It was a morale booster for me, who spent the last week sobbing over cuts at my agency. I'm remote so haven't been able to mourn with my colleagues in person. I've felt disconnected from it all. Attending the protest in my home town yesterday helped my own mental health considerably.

It’s not just that they fundamentally misunderstand basic economics, but that they also want to live a fantasy where they make $200k working at a toaster-making factory while their stay-at-home wife makes dinner for them in the suburbs and cares for their 4 children.
