As someone in ocean and coastal conservation I never thought fire would be a big part of our work, but here we are. The fire in Pacific Palisades has a lot in common with the Lahaina fire. Both burned to the ocean and are absolutely devastating.

One of the most destructive firestorms in L.A. history kills 5, burns 2,000 buildings
The Palisades fire has burned more than 17,000 acres and 1,000 structures, including many homes, while five people have died in the Eaton fire. At least 130,000 residents are under evacuation orders.

Narratives take over quickly in a disaster. Yes, wealthy and powerful people are losing their homes. Pacific Palisades also has a large mobile home park, and undoubtedly other lower cost housing.

Look at this devastation of the beautiful Pacific Palisades. I am in the next town over, outside the evacuation boundary, but not by that much. I have a packed suitcase, the wind gusts are not as high as they were, and I am vigilant. I feel so sad for so many.

When you hear about wildfires, most people associate them with places that are remote or rural, mountain towns, that kind of thing. The Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires are nothing like that …..

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires.

As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry.

The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.
