Thank you to the Peterson Institute for International Economics (@piie.com), and to my coauthor Gary Hufbauer for allowing me my say on the Trump Administration's venal power grab in destroying the world's rules-based trading system.

The world trading system is dying: You should fear its replacement
Too few Americans may understand what Canadian prime minister Mark Carney is talking about when he refers to a “system of global trade.” Too few may grasp what we are losing and what we are likely to ...

We'll see if Schumer has any control over the Democratic caucus ...

He could move the eight out of any major role on Senate committees and replace them with new people. Jean Shaheen is the "Ranking Member" on the foreign relations committee. Durbin on the Judiciary Committee. That should end.

@kaine.senate.gov, this defeat is on you. When Virginians see their ACA premiums soar and want to blame someone, many will blame Democrats. They will be right to do so.

You have failed us.
i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Our government is foul. People who think this is good are ... foul.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

Justin has a knack for condensing a set of major arguments into less than a minute of air time.
Trump's tariffs are hurting us in two ways:

First, the obvious: Higher costs → either lower profits or higher prices.

Second, more subtle (perhaps bigger): We’ve signaled we’re an unreliable partner, so allies are reorganizing supply chains to avoid us. That's hard to unwind.

Yep. JD Vance and his bullshit politics ...

Go, Josh.
Shapiro: He rose to some prominence by writing a book about growing up in Appalachia, where there are a whole lot of people who get SNAP. He made millions of dollars off telling their stories, and then he turned his damn back on those very people he likes to write about and claim as his own.

Sandwich Man found innocent!

I guess the DOJ had a .... sub-par case.

Jury chews over fate of 'sandwich guy,' who became a D.C. hero after chucking a sub at a federal officer
Defense attorney Sabrina Shroff told the jury that "a footlong from Subway could not and certainly did not inflict bodily harm."

I went to a Forest Service website to check something out and saw the "radical left" banner. At a minimum, every senior administrator at the Forest Service will be summarily fired under the next Democratic administration. This is a criminal act and I would hope to see prosecutions as well.

If Zohran gets more than a million votes, would that mean he has a strong .... ah, mamdate? 😉

Early voting trends put Mamdani within reach of 1 million votes: pollster
Pollster Adam Carlson said he thinks New York City's mayoral race candidate Zohran Mamdani could win 1 million votes on Election Day.

Musk reveals many things. Most obviously, he is the bigoted South African he has always been.

He also has learned nothing from JRR Tolkien. He is like the elementary school child who can tell you the name of a character but who cannot even begin to talk about any meaning the story might convey.
Elon Musk, "These lovely small towns in England, Scotland and Ireland, they've been living their lives quietly. They're like hobbits"

"And so one day, 1,000 people show up in your village of 500 and start raping the kids"

"This has now happened, God knows how many times in Britain"

If the GOP loses the next election (the "if" depends on rigging), will Democrats try to put this sordid past in the rear view mirror to return to normalcy? Or will they initiate investigations and prosecutions? I sure hope for the latter.

Who would have thought that a politically sensible administration would do something terrible that is so concentrated on its own constituents. Who would have thought that those voters would vote for an administration that so callously disregards their economic interests (and broadcast that to them).

What a world. I can't even begin to imagine Gaza.
Breakfast in Kharkiv.

So many Ukrainian children have become so accustomed to explosions during the years of war.

Sound on, if you can.

Yep. He learned his politics from his dad and from his current mentor in the White House.
oh just straight up gutter racism!
So here's Andrew Cuomo reacting to Maria Bartiromo wondering if Mamdani will "change the look of New York" and have Muslim women "completely covered up," telling her that Mamdani "doesn't understand New York culture" because he has "dual citizenship" and "he's a citizen of Uganda."

Damn, I've gotta give the Tommy Tuberville Award this week to its namesake, ... Tommy Tuberville!

The Tuberville Award is the weekly distinction given to the politician who says the most head-shaking stupid thing over the course of the week. It's named after the boneheaded Alabamian.
Tuberville just really fundamentally doesn’t get what his job is does he?

That's nice, but count me as a skeptic.

If you want to do real social good, give (and volunteer) to help a food bank. The people who use a food bank are overwhelmingly in need.

Around 7.5 million people are unemployed for a multitude of reasons. Almost 42 million receive SNAP.

Facts are important things. They're also inconvenient at times for idiots and ideologues.
We’ve so poisoned the idea of a safety net that people assume everyone receiving SNAP is unemployed.
