Having lived under it, I think the comp is modi. The comp has always been modi. Thats who Trump really aspires to be.
The problem with studying political violence for a living is that I can imagine far darker scenarios than Orban's Hungary. America's own history suggests a greater reliance on coercion and violence. Orban's Hungary might be the ceiling, not the floor, of Trump's America
The Orban model (which Trump explicitly embraces) is exactly what we have to guard against

Also the sexism and the racism.

Our white patriarchy elected a Black man twice so we foolishly thought twice (!!!!) that it would elect a woman, but no. Not on your life.

And a Black woman? Crazy we even thought it was possible when a white woman couldn’t get the votes
I don’t know man. I think the electorate is dumber and getting their information from right wing grifters who make up shit on podcasts and YouTube. It’s asymmetrical warfare and we will lose until we figure this out.

Really puts 2016 into perspective. “Oh Hillary lost because she wasn’t likable”

Oh really? What female candidate do voters like enough to elect president? The answer is no one. 🙃

And here's what was potentially lost.
This @carbonbrief.org analysis estimates the potential climate impact of the next US administration.

Lowlights:

* adds 4 GtCO2e of emissions by 2030
* nearly $1T in extra damages
* estimate doesn't even include fossil fuel expansion
* all but puts the nail in the coffin of the 1.5C target
Analysis: Trump election win could add 4bn tonnes to US emissions by 2030 - Carbon Brief
A victory for Donald Trump in November’s presidential election could add 4bn tonnes of US emissions by 2030 compared with Joe Biden’s plans

I'm a climate scientist living in Texas who served as a lead author on the National Climate Assessment under the previous Trump administration. I witnessed first-hand its chilling impact on access to data, funding & publication of research, implementation of solutions, and scientists themselves. 🧵
Trump victory has sweeping climate change consequences
From the endorsement of climate denial to a brain drain of climate scientists, Trump's victory will bring major changes.
