The “AI” that most people now think of as “AI” is not intelligent. It has no discernment or understanding. It’s a sop to human laziness that is, itself, astoundingly lazy.

We were promised Data and the holodeck. Instead we got Battle Droids who can do paint by numbers, badly.
my “AI is over” anecdote is that my wife was hired over the summer to write scripts for a big tech company explaining how to use their AI tools and after many rounds of revisions, the latest notes said “we’re finding a lot of AI fatigue among our users” and to remove all references to AI
Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

Do you ever look up a book on the library website and plan your journey to the most convenient branch with an available copy only to remember that you already bought it and it’s literally on you shelf right now

#filmsky there's a channel on Pluto that often plays long stretches of back-to-back Donnie Yen movies. Turn this on and I'm like a baby watching Ms. Rachel

I read about the pope praising cinema and thought about posting something complimentary… but nah. Preserving women’s rights > preserving movie theaters. Nice try Leo #filmsky
One more thing to remember: this story comes as Republicans across the country are working to hide maternal mortality data. They're disbanding maternal death committees, stacking them with anti-choice activists, and obscuring the connection between deaths & bans

Like all films about the future, they reflect their respective presents. Alphaville’s was shot in modern buildings around Paris, futuristic but of their time. Dark City’s malleable city is a virtual reality, presaging The Matrix (which reused DC’s rooftop set) #filmsky #dystopianoir

And I think noir can express the cynicism about futurism felt by those left out of the vision of progress sold by technocrats - which is more & more of us #filmsky #dystopianoir
November 16, 2025 at 1:06 AM
I think a scifi setting can underscore the roots of noir’s themes of alienation - modernity, its economic & social structures, the big machine of the city & the people who don’t fit into it #filmsky #dystopianoir

I don’t care to quibble over the boundaries of a genre, but looking for patterns is productive. And overlaying the two genre patterns of scifi & noir could be a revealing exercise for each. What can scifi tell us about noir, & what can noir tell us about scifi? #filmsky #dystopianoir
November 16, 2025 at 12:56 AM
Both sci-fi and noir are hard to define, w many classics of each genre characterized more by style, themes, attitude, setting than a strict accounting of genre rules. Is Star Wars scifi or fantasy? Is Sunset Blvd film noir or satire? #filmsky #dystopianoir

Currently prepping for our Noirvember meeting of TCMC w a focus on Dystopia Noir. We’ll be discussing cult classics of this micro-genre Alphaville (Godard 1965) and Dark City (Alex Proyas 1998) both available free w a library card on Kanopy. The most famous Dystopia Noir is, of course, Blade Runner

Absolute must read on the AI bailout-in-progress: apparently it's not enough that lifetimes of human ingenuity and creativity have been stolen and enclosed to create generative AI and balloon billionaire wealth - much more public looting is in store...
This week Open AI walked back a call for the govt to backstop financing for its trillion dollar investments in data centers. This was only the tip of the iceberg; a slow bailout for AI firms is already underway. Read more from @ambakak.bsky.social and I in @wsj.com: www.wsj.com/opinion/you-...
